does a mithril chain shirt +1 affect your swimming check at all? even though the armor check penalty is +0, doesn't the weight of the shirt pull you underwater?

No, the weight doesn't pull you under. It did in 3.0 but not 3.5.

Clarification: In 3.0, your swim check was subject to a -1 for each 5 pounds you had on your person.

In 3.5, that is changed and you are simply subject to double your armor check penalty.

However! Be advised that if you are wearing light armor and you have a medium or heavy load, your armor check penalty is not the one listed on the armor.
