There Is No Honour's Definition of 'Evening'

Savage Tide Adventure Path

OK, so I'm running 'There Is No Honour' over an internet forum (no one else around here plays DnD, and so I'm forced to improvise until I can get a group of schoolfriends going on the old roleplaying), and the group has just met with Lavinia. Granted, I'm not the best DM ever, and already I've made a mistake (though I'm counted as a link between the Jade Ravens and the PC Party) by sending the Dwarf Druid to deliver the letters to them all, in place of Kora (who, I must say, is a favourite NPC of mine to add my own brand to). However, the next problem is a slightly bigger one, and really I just wanted to enquire whether this was on purpose, or just a mistake. I'm not blaming anyone, but it just seems a little odd:
The letter delivered to the PCs said that the dinner would be held in the evening, and so I sent the group to the manor just as sunset was arriving. Once the dinner is over, then it will most likely be coming close to dark. Therefore, if they have any hope to catch the Blue Nixie, which sails at midnight, they'll need to act fast. Also, all the thugs and Sollar will be active, loading the cargo. This makes the assualt a little tricky, doesn't it?
Personally, I've made the delivery take place the next night, so the PCs have a full day to investigate the habour and launch an assualt on the Blue Nixie. How did everyone else manage this, or was it designed to put pressure on the party to act now?
Cheers

Vark's thugs are scheduled to make their shipment the midnight of the day the PCs visit the ship. That could be just after Lavinia's get-to-know-you dinner, or it could be 3 days later when the PCs finally get around to checking out the Blue Nixie.

We generally try to keep timers in adventures vague, because certain party mixes make timed adventures difficult. Also, tracking countdowns is a pain.

Ah, thank you very much.
