Right now, I am being torn apart by my mother in-law-thing and have snuck away to the study/internet in order to hate her and not have to smile politely and pretend her acid barbed words are not hitting the mark...

Good to know that other people have the same experience with in-laws in general. My nightmare was the Christmas Eve party we hosted for the un-appreciative, ignorant, self-centered bastards who spent all year backstabbing each other and tearing each other down to make themselves feel bigger.
Screw 'em all, they don't deserve 10 hours of work me and my wife went through or the $300 worth of cool food that I slaved over to try to help them enjoy the evening. They can all find someplace else to get together next year, I refuse to be stepped on again.Anyway, thank god that's over and Christmas morning was fantastic for my kids and wife. Happy holidays all, and don't worry, the extended family will be gone soon.
