About how long does it usually take before something is shipped?

I ordered Lord Flataroy's Guide to Fortifications a week ago as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend, and it still says "pending" for the status... At this point I'm losing hope that it'll get here in time, since the charge on my credit card hasn't even gone through yet so it obviously hasn't been shipped. It doesn't say it's out of stock, so how long should this take?

The order shipped today via UPS Ground. You should receive a shipping confirmation email with the tracking number later today or early tomorrow.

If you don't mind me asking, what took so long? If it was in stock, how could it take 10 days before it even got shipped? It's scheduled to arrive the day after Christmas, which sucks for a whole lot of reasons, including the fact that my boyfriend's leaving that morning to stay with his father for a week so I won't be able to give him jack for Christmas, even though I ordered the thing in plenty of time for it to ship. Anyway, long story short, I'm just wondering if this is standard business practice all year-round, or just a Christmas miracle.
