Liberty's Edge

"a vast sacrificial pit into which hundreds of what look like humanoid apes were thrown."
what the hell is that? I mean it's freaky cool, but...what is it?

It's up to the individual DM as to what it is.

In Greyhawk, at least, the humanoid apes are dakons. What did that to them though... that's left unsaid.

Liberty's Edge

This mystery will now consume most of my waking hours for the next month. Talk about more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

this incounter is more fun then a barrel full of ...um...oh.

FWIW, This isn't the first use of a sacrificial pit in D&D. The Lost Library of Cormanthyr mentions a sacrificial well to Vaprak the Devourer. I wouldn't be surprised to find other deities whose worshipers make use of such wells.

Olman sacrificial rituals? Something to do with the rise and deification of Kyuss? Another example of Suloise racism? The possibilities abound. In my mind, it evokes the horrific scene in "the Killing Fields" where the hero stumbles into a paddy-field filled with bones left by the Khmer Rouge.

Anyone: did dakons ever make it into 3e, much less 3.5? Any reference is appreciated.

Oh, never mind--they're in one of those pesky Living Greyhawk Journals. Now, if only someone would take all the critters from those and produce a 3.5e "Monsters of Greyhawk" hardcover...
