I just saw that episode again on Sci Fi channel a few months ago. Good stuff.

And there was this lady I worked with from India, and I told her I thought so-and-so was a rakshasa, and she said, a "what?"
So I explained to her what it was, and she said, "oh, you mean a (and then she pronounced it correctly)" it sounds really cool
pronounced authentically. Then she busted out laughing.

Just so we're on the same channel, are we talking about the classic, cheesey 70s series with Darren McGavin, the Spanish Moss monster and a really bad looking werewolf (played by none other than Victor Newman of Young and the Restless)? Or is this the new series? I haven't seen any of that yet.

Just curious...

The old one I watched when I was in second grade. I couldn't get into the new one at all whatsoever. In the new one, they replaced Darren McGavin with this young model boy, and I just left the room.

The one that was on Friday nights on A.B.C.

So my hubby frequently tells me. Darth Canis, you should go forth and endeavor to pick up the complete series (the original, the one, the only, with Darren McGavin) when your funds have increased to an acceptable level.

The zombie episode is a great one, as well as the rakshasa one. :D

Yep, just because you have a school named after the street that Xavier's School is on, immediately means its a comic book reference. Graymalkin goes back a lot farther than X-men.

Graymalkin is another word for a wizard's familiar, and it is the name given by the wierd sisters in Macbeth. Malkin is also said to be the name of a demon.

Enough of the Shakespeare references, already!

I've been struggling to because it's not just the phonics per se but also the meter of the way she said it.

It sounds like "rek-shissa" and you sorta draw out the first syllable, and say the next two syllables really quick.

If you don't like the comic book references, don't use them. I happen to love them (Except for "Man Forever" but that's just because I think DC characters are lame.)In my world I allow all kinds of references from pop culture and movies. If a player wants to do up a comic book character as a PC I'm all for it (Provided there are some checks and balances to keep the PC from being too strong for the world.) I read over the Gramalkin lane adventure, and Other than the name of the school, there is very little to tie it to Xmen. Take out the name and you are alot closer to Harry Potter than Xmen, but even then association of the refrence to a wizard school is because Harry Potter is big right now. D&D had schools of magic long before JK Rowlings came along.
The fact that this is a fantasy world means that nothing can be dismissed. IF your players want a traditional world with no literature refrences fine. But if I remember right, D&D got sued in the begining for having so many Tolkien References? And even now the system is permiated by Tolkien monsters (Treant anyone?). On the other hand if your players want to play as Xmen and fight The Preditor, who works as an enforcer to the Black Knight from Holy Grail, thats fine if it makes you and your players happy.
