"Vodoo" magic in Greyhawk

Savage Tide Adventure Path

I am not that familiar with Greyhawk, but we run the APs (SCAP and STAP) in this lovely setting. Last session we had a TPK which means new characters have to be made. And since my girl friend has seen Dead Man's Chest she wants to play a Tia Dalma-type character, which means vodoo magic and some divinations.
As she decided to play the arcane caster of the group we thought about a sorcerer using curses or debuffs like ray of enfeeblement or spells like cause fear, summon undead, animate death etc. Now my problem is a proper race and some more spell suggestions to increase the vodoo feeling. Perhaps a Rhenee or an Olman?

I would check out Complete Arcane.

The Wu Jen class (with a change of name) is perfect for you! The class depicts a type of spellcaster who commands spirit entities, the elements and the powers of nature; they often live as hermits in the wilderness and are all about communing with various spirit-powers in order to learn spells and mystic secrets.

One of the interesting class features is the use of ‘taboos’.

The character gains a number of in-game taboos or restrictions every time they gain the Wu Jen version of meta magic known as ‘Spell Secret’.

The classes in-game taboos are things like: cannot bathe, cannot wear yellow, cannot swear, cannot eat meat etc. These taboos can be interpreted as pacts you make with various loa I suppose. Violation of a taboo means loss of spells for that day.

As for race, I think human sounds best or possibly ghostwise halfling, wildelf, half orc, or something like that. :)

She could be from one of the plantations surrounding Sasserine. I'm thinking along the lines of Caribbean plantations and real voodoo. If you are playing in Greyhawk, you could use Olman or Tuov humans from Hepmonaland or Amedio. Or maybe a Wild Elf. Sorceror sounds good or modified Wu-jen. What about the Witch from the DMG?

The Rhenee have a very gypsy-like feel to them, complete with old women who lay curses on adventurers. They aren't exactly voodoo, but have that hedge-magic feel to them.

Olman are more Central American Indian (think Aztec) in feel. Neither is a perfect match, but both could work for the character concept. And of course, nothing says your campaign has to follow Greyhawk canon. If you want your Olman or Rhenee to be voodoo-practicioners, go right ahead.
