Would STAP support an aquatic animal companion. Rarely get to see these critters and would be great. See a couple uses for one in the 1st adventure but how about the rest of the campaign?

I don't know if this might help you or not Shade, but when JJ answered a post of mine about having an aquatic PC in my party, he "strongly advised" against a fully aquatic character, since most of the AP does take place in air-breathing environs (though amphibious PCs would be fine). My player now has an amphibious aquatic elf druid (she's got some surface elf blood in her), and I'm now wondering the same thing you are about an animal companion.
I would think the same suggestion holds true for any familiars/animal companions as well as for the PCs. A fully aquatic creature might very well be stuck on the sidelines until the adventure heads back to the seas, which wouldn't be much fun after the first few times.
That being said, I'd love to bounce some other ideas around and come up with something unique...

Correct. While much of Savage Tide occurs near water, the majority of the campaign takes place on dry land. In fact, I believe there's only one adventure that'll feature extensive underwater sections. An all-aquatic animal companion would have to sit out the majority of the campaign.
The way to go is an amphibious animal companion, to tell the truth.

That being the case, what would some good amphibious animal companions be? (This is an open question to anyone with ideas.)
Also, as Stormwrack suggests, you could always modify an existing animal. The animal type is just to define creatures that operate under real world biology (but not neccessarily physics: see the Roc as an example) and doesn't have supernatural powers or intel above 2 (although monkeys and dolphins and those grey parrots could technically violate that rule)
Any suggestions of "modified animals" that would fill an amphibious animal companion role? Mudsharks? Hill Crabs? (Stupid vermin not counting!)

I am tempted to play a druid with a large crab companion. Then when I attack some skanky character shout:
"Now there's a switch the crab caught YOU!"
Crab would be a cool one.
Sea Monkeys would be neat, (you know actual aquatic monkeys), or how about an otter?
For Flight: Sea gull, albatross, pelican, duck, ibis.
For something more exotic: Turtle, sea crocodile, sea snake.
If you're in eberron or allowed more exotic fare: There was a dragon article in the infamous Dinosaurs, Pirates and Ninjas issue which had a slew of dinosaur companions a couple were amphibious from memory.
Just off the top of my head.

For real animals, most snakes can swim. I think a land snake is a better choice than a sea snake.
A water bird of prey would be good. Could be tough like those ones that dive into the water, or light hearted like a pelican.
I like the otter idea.
What about a salt water croc? It could start out small (low CR) then grow with the PCs.
For made up creatures, anything goes.

Since animal companions can be replaced without penalty, I'm not sure it's a mistake to have, say a porpoise, for an adventure or two, then dismiss it when you get to the isle of Dread and hire a deinonychus or something. The only real bother is figuring out when you've really switched environments and statting up a new companion.
