Grand Lodge

I love the book and have been looking forward to the movie for some time; I finally got around to see it yesterday. It has gotten a lot of bad reviews, but I actually thought it was pretty decent, though the novel is a lot better. Still, L.A. Confidential remains the best Ellroy screen adaption. Worthwhile if you like disturbed crime dramas and don't mind complex plotting.

The Onion actually gave it a really good review. Hmm. I still want to see it at some point.

The Exchange

Saw it last week. It was OK, in the same vein as LA Confidential but probably not as good (and the two leads had far too good a set of profiles to be convincing as former boxers). A bit incoherent in places too. But that said, it was enjoyable, a little bit grisly in places, and diverting for an hour or two.

At least the movie is very similar to the book, which is great. James Ellroy is my american favorite author. I loved the book and the whole LA Quartet. IMO the 'LA Confidential' movie was a failure due to excessive political correctness and a catastrophic casting (except for Russell Crowe as Bud White). The 'Black Dahlia' movie respects the book as a noir story with in depth characters and a complex plot. Casting is good (Josh Hartnett was a good surprise), dialogs are very close to the originals from the book and I loved the use of filters for the image. All in all a great movie.

Bran

Great movie.

The sets, costumes, dialgoue and even filming style were very 40s styled, and I thought it built great mood.

The dynamic, dark, dirty underworld setting was fantastic too.

Plotwise, it was pretty heavy and complx, but played out nicely.

A+
