Hi all,

This might be sacrelige, but I have a question. I'm using Sasserine as Escalant in my Forgotten Realms Campaign, but really like the map and background written, so I'll be using 90% of what's there, but rename all parties to protect the innocent. :P

Can anyone tell me a good way that I can alter the PDF image of the map so I can rename some of the streets? Also, I need to rename Parrot Island to something more - Thayan/Untheric. Ibis Island?

Thanks!

Well, the map is an imbedded image in the PDF--you can't edit the text directly even with Adobe Acrobat. As such, you'd have to extract the image to something like Photoshop or GIMP and make the changes there. Even then, you'll run into issues of getting the fonts to look right, etc. Basically, modifying the map will be no easy task...

Now Ibis Island, that sounds good!

If the fonts have not been rasterized as part of the background then your best shot is to open the PDF in Illustrator. However, if the text is rasterized then you need to open it in something like Photoshop, rubberstamp out the names and add in your new ones (not a fun proposition without a crazy high resolution image).

Overall it would be most advantageous to open it in any photoediting software and simply cover it with a box and write your new name over it... or just use the names provided.

Looks like the map is cut up into 18 sections. The fonts are rasterized in the images, so editing will be difficult at best. It's pretty nice, however, in that you can copy out individual image elements. That snazzy ship watermark background, for instance, or the cover image of the guide (no fonts rasterized to the image to mess it up).

Oh, and do keep in mind anything you did with this would be personal-use only--you can't reproduce/distribute the content in any way without Paizo's say-so (I've assumed that doesn't include printing your own copy, otherwise one couldn't print the PDF file out for use away from a computer)...

Which brings me around to a question for our Paizo folks. I'm keeping a blog for my game, open only to my players. Could we get a web-pack or some such (or permission to use images like those above) for this type of use? Right now I've got the blog built with free images, but it'd be nice to include some of the official stuff. Understandable if this isn't possible, but it would be a nice touch for this campaign, which will likely run for two years with me.

Assuming Paizo doesn't slap you with an injunction for copyright violation ;-) would you mind posting a link to your blog? I am thinking about starting one for my next campaign and would appreciate a good exemplar.

Well, I'd have to get Paizo permission to do so--the first entry is my campaign intro for the player's wherein Lavinia (who is traveling on a ship with the characters) talks about the history and character of Sasserine. This is basically my Mystara-conversion of the Backdrop: Sasserine article, minus the details that are DM-only.

I'd be more than happy to post it, but I wouldn't do so without a nod from James and co. first.

I would be surprised if you got explicit permission - saying something like "it's okay for you to post our copyrighted material on your website" is the sort of statement that could waive a lot of Paizo's rights. I also doubt they're going to take the time to check your website to make sure it's not infringing. Considering the other adventure path based resources to which other posters have linked, I believe that Paizo takes a benign neglect policy to most fan websites. Unless you've got pdf scans or full text versions of issues of Dragon and Dungeon, I doubt they will come after you. The injunction comment was meant entirely tongue in cheek.

Your probably right. I likely play things a little safer than most because I've had some stuff (although minor) published and hope to have more. As such, I'm a bit of a stickler on stepping on copyrights and such.

Tell you what, I'll post the link below (I haven't yet gotten my players all signed up to the blog, so can't set full restrictions). If this looks like inappropriate use, please let me know and I'll shut it down...
