Someone told me I was a good role-player

I had "active shooter" training today. We use simunition wax bullets to practice taking out Columbine style attackers in coordinated building entry and dynamic tactical scenarios. Lot's a fun, lot's of bruises, good training.

During one of the scenarios I was supposed to play the part of a hostage who was supposed to run out of a room, screaming, begging for help and then running down a long corridor.

I was having fun, so I got into it...let forth some blood curdling screams, begging for help and running down the hallway while shrieking hysterically.

The SWAT guys running the training told me "hey, you're a good role-player."

What do they know, huh?

You should have pulled a d6 out of your pocket and asked him what it was. Hehe. Secret handshake.

That's awesome F2K. :P

Yeah, but trust me...this guy is NOT an RPGer--the SWAT team doesn't attract the geeky cops if you know what I mean. I just thought it was kind of amusing.

Another thing D&D is good for. Builds up your acting chops. Way to go.

LOL. I saw the pop up blurb on this post on the main page and said to myself, "Let me guess... Stefan." It's fun being right ;)
Oh, and fun role-playing.

It's the closest I get to "real" dungeoneering. I get to wear armor, a helmet, carry a light source, work in a team of four characters, explore a dark place for hidden threats, watch out for traps and engage in (simulated) combat. Someone mentioning role-playing just topped off a fun day at work for me, which are very few and very far between (although I do get to do the PD LARP thing twice a year, once for Close Quarters Combat Low Light certification and once for Active Shooter training, both courses are mandated as annual training by my Dept.)

I also get to wear camouflage pants and a Rush concert T-shirt to work, which is a treat, LOL.

Damn! My life is BORING!

My life is boring too. I work in administration now, but I hope to change that within a few months. Boring is not bad.

That remembers me of a supposedly chinese curse:" May you live in exciting times." :-)

Stefan

It's just training. It doesn't get exciting until the real thing happens, which means hopefully never (at least around here where I live). The key is to train as realistically as possible in order to teach the skills that work under stress.

Two of our instructors were guys who had just come back from Iraq, where they had served a year in the Reserves before returning to their regular jobs of being police officers. Their insight and tips and tricks are just very valuable things to know.

I really hope you only have to train; you dont want the real thing; nobody does. Nice going btw.

Thanks....we haven't had any school shootings (knock on wood) here and we regularly meet with all the schools to discuss emergency lockdown protocols and what to expect from us. Last year we had a major exercise at a local high school simulating a worst case scenario. Unfortunately, there's only so much prep work and training that you can do for crazed gunman cases, since 90% are suicidal as well.
