Ask of the search engine (top left) and the answers will be revealed to thee in great abundance. Or click on the link I just created.

This came up a couple weeks ago. I had this to say:

I used nine level 1 commoners wearing padded leather and wielding longspears. They set against charge with a readied action and used aid another if PCs advanced, trying to hedge the PCs in the first room with the skeletons. They showed a fanatical sense of determination and some organization, even though they clearly lacked the mettle of true warriors.

They didn't last long. ;)

Once they were killed, The Beast made its appearance while the tieflings backed off and regrouped with the clerics.

As the tieflings died, the clerics managed to double-back and escape to the elevator. Once they reached the top, the clerics severed the chain using acid taken from the black pool. Things got interesting at that point. ;)

The easiest way to look at this is to figure that the average Lvl 1 Commoner is a CR of 1/2. Two therefore equal CR 1 and 4 then equal CR 3.

That is, however, a dismal number to throw at the party, so I boosted it to 8 (and a technical CR of 5). Since they were badly equipped (a longspear can't be used in close combat and a dagger is useless against heroes of the proper level for this adventure), I lowered them back to CR 3.

You sure about that? By my calculation it should be CR2

The Exchange

CR 1 creatures are the exception to the CR rule of X + X = X+2. It goes CR 1/2 --> CR 1 --> CR 2.

Also, commoners are actually worth CR 1/3, not 1/2 like the other NPC classes, thus 3 would equal CR 1 and 6 equal CR 2.
