Maybe I missed it but has there been any word on whether the Abyss part of the adventure will be on Abyssal seas? I haven't picked up Fiendish COdex so I have no idea if it has much on the seas in the Abyss, but Stormwrack has a bit on it. It would seem strange to how say 2/3s of the adventure based around ports, ship and islands to have it switched abruptly to a land adventure in the Abyss. I'm hoping for the Abyssal seas with fiendish sea creatures and dark unknown depths.

Me too! I really hope that the adventure takes the party on a trip down the river Styx, but whether it's on a river or an ocean (or both!), a water-borne adventure in the Abyss would be great.

i haven't seen any official thing, but there seems to be a strong indication that the AP will close with a tussle with Demogorgon on his home turf, and since the Fiendish Codex does show a great deal of the locations on his plane being waterbound if not sub-aquatic, i'd say we've got a good chance at one abyssal sea encounter at the least.

Oceans freak me out; thinking about an abyssal ocean makes me tense. Makes me want to secretly pass one player a note reading something like this:
A silent black ocean spans out in all directions from your battered ship, like the hull is gently gliding on an ebon sheet of glass... The wind is dead still and the black skies are thick with a twist of oppressive purple and blood red clouds, their formations hint at an intelligence of sorts [that wants you to KNOW it knows you don’t belong here...] The oppressive heavy air smells like copper and lavender - sickly perfumed and sweet enough to turn the stomach after just one breath but the air is thin here and you cant help but breath deeply… no land in sight... and no hope either...
Edging closer to the rail to look closer at this strange sea makes you feel like your walking to the edge of a very tall and hazardous cliff on a stormy day, your legs shake and you almost dare not go any closer, it takes all your nerve to look below…
Beneath the glass-like surface of this ocean something stirs... something immense, rising upwards quickly...
An impossibly huge, great green eye, presses up its gigantic black pupil to the solid glass surface of this 'sea' and hits you with a look of complete malice: ITS STARING AT YOUR SOUL! A point above and in-between your eyes burns with icy cold fear, urine runs down your inner thigh and somehow you now remember the pain of being born!
…then suddenly the massive eye starts to dart around frantically, seeming panicked!
The moment of terror passes and the eye (and whatever owns it) disappears back below into the depths beyond, worse thing is you somehow have the feeling it was 'pulled' back down there against its will...
No one else on board the ship seemed to notice what just happened; everyone else is looking up at the clouds, unaware of the utterly silent horrific life changing, soul raping encounter you just beheld…

Yep Abyssal oceans would be freaky no quetion. I was reading the Stromwrack boof again last night and in the planar seas there is definately a paragraph about Demogorgon's home layer being a huge sea. I really hope it pans out this way. My group is really gearing up to be sea folk (either in class, race or PrC). I would hate for them to go 12 or so levels and then have it mean nothing.
On a somewhat side note, if it does pan out this way the Leviathan Hunter PrC might end up being really cool.

Oceanic themes will continue throughout Savage Tide. Not every adventure will be set on or near an ocean, but most of them will be. And there will indeed be plenty of Abyssal ocean stuff in the last 3rd of the campaign. Characters who take Stormwrack prestige classes should end up being pretty happy for the most part. Those who take Sandstorm prestige classes? Not so much.

In the Fiendish Codex, the Abyssal Ocean communicates with the sea of every lair that has a sea. So, I figure that that covers the angle of getting there.
Would one need a sextant of arcane make to find one's way?
Also, the ships of chaos sound pretty tailor-made to an apperance in this sort of AP.
And R-type, nice essay.

The Ship of Chaos detailed in the War of the Spider Queen series really really really needs a write up. It was just too cool.
An abyssal sextant? Hmm...*rubs hands together*
