Lich Queen's Beloved 3.5

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Does anyone know if there is an update from 3.0 to 3.5 for Lich Queens beloved.

No need for one. Lich Queen's Beloved was a 3.5 adventure. Issue 100 was the first 3.5 issue.

Hmmmm... I don't think so, Sebastion. I believe that was still in the time of 3.0. I remember using the prestige classes in the Polyhedron flipside for my v.3.0 campaign before v.3.5 made it to print. But, I've opened my yap and been wrong before.

Was that one of James Jacobs' adventures? If so, I wonder if he has any conversion notes he'd like to share if it was pre v.3.5.

I remember very specifically reading the issue to try and determine the changes in the 3.5 rules. So, you're correct that the issue came out before the rule books, but the issue itself used the 3.5 ruleset.

Issue #100 was the first 3.5 issue of Dungeon, so there's no need to update any of the adventures therein (including "Lich Queen's Beloved").

That module was a high point from my previous campaign. I used Tunarath as a staging ground for a large-scale assault on the city. It was madness. The PCs (party level was about 19 at the time), along with cohorts and summoned allies, raged through Tunarath. Hundreds of githyanki died. Most fled. Vlaakith used Gate to send a balor after the PC barbarian (vorpal axe... balor explodes... great scene). The wizards and clerics got involved as the force made it to the Palace. The PCs blasted their way into the Palace, faced off with one of Vlaakith's clones (the spellfire channeler wasted her in one double-blast), and continued. Later on the barbarian fell victim to the mirror of life trapping, and the rest had to fight the real Vlaakith and her dragon and undead minions. The battle lasted about two hours or so. Some close calls, but no deaths. The group moved on to find her phylactery (the two-headed dragon was vorpaled by the barbarian and eventually killed by an impromtu sneak force orb from the gnome arcane trickster), and Vlaakith was destroyed. Of course, the Palace began to crumble once Vlaakith's pylactery was destroyed, so the group had to flee quickly amidst falling debris. Just like in Conan the Destroyer! YES!

The entire githyanki Incursion campaign was a highlight of my DMing experience. I squeezed a year and a half out of that information. The githyanki made such a nice change from the drow and orcs I was using in the earlier parts of the campaign. The air ships, the Astral Plane, the blitzkrieg style take-over, the web enhancement with the entire city map spelled out and detailed, and the Lich-Queen herself... So much great info to work with. Thank you for that, Paizo.

Just remember my disclaimer about being wrong before, folks :/

Yes, now that I'm sitting home at my desk I can see that my v.3.5 Dungeon mags start at #100. I was running 3.0 and used the v.3.5 prestige classes in Polyedron, now that I think about it.

Anyhoo, it's an awesome adventure written by someone who's first name is James. :p

Hey! I gave you your dues. The issue did come out before the core 3.5 books. You weren't just making stuff up.

Ok, you were making stuff up, but your disclaimer was ironclad.

The githyanki information in polyhedron was using 3rd ed, particulary for Psionics though, so I tend to class it as a 3.0 adventure myself. But the whole githyanki incursion stuff was awesome!

Hey, guess what, Sebastian. We're both wrong. Christopher Perkins wrote it. Sorry, Christopher. Talk about a failed Knowledge (dungeon adventures) check. I really thought my modifier was a lot better :/

Finally got a chance to check out my copy of Dungeon 100. Yes it is a 3.5 adventure but the scenario and the polyhedron stuff about the githyanki don't make any use of the expanded psionics handbook rules. That's why i assumed it was 3rd ed.

Liberty's Edge

I always wanted to start a game around this; the issue came out when my son was just born, and the only adventure I was running was "Sleep Deprivation in the Chamber of the Wailing Swaddled One." Infinitely more frightning than mere githyanki. That sonic attack form the Wailing One had...

I think 'The Lich Queen's Beloved' in combination with the back-up material in Polyhedron and Dragon #309 was one of the best things that ever appeared within these hallowed pages.
Just reading it for inspiration was a lot of fun.
As already mentioned the only drawback to this feature was the fact that the stuff from the then recently released Expanded Psionics Handbook was ignored. But i understand this because they'd have to reprint very much of its content to not confuse readers that didn't own the EXPH...
I'd really like to see a project like this again. And i found it cool that James Wyatt (i guess he wrote the back-up stuff from Dragon #309, but i could be wrong) just outlined the progression of a Lvl 1-20 campaign. That was great! As a DM you could stick to the outline and still can be creative designing the adventures that will advance the story. Maybe this is something for more experienced DM's and beginners might've problems with this, but this was a concept i'd like to see more often.

XPH was not out at the time Dungeon 100 was printed. In fact, subscribers received Dungeon 100 before the core 3.5 rulebooks were even available. EXPH was the 3.5 revamp of the Psionics Handbook, and was one of the first post 3.5 supplements, but it was still about 6 months after Dungeon 100 if I remember correctly.

Edit: Okay, I just double-checked. The release date of XPH was April 2004. The date on issue 100 was June 2003 (shipped to subscribers in May 2003). The release date of the 3.5 phb was July 2003. First came Dungeon #100, then came the 3.5 phb, then came the XPH.

Oh, you're right. Its amusing how you can get things mixed up in memory...
But i didn't make clear what my point was: They didn't mention psionics at all and that was what i disliked because i find the psionic githyankis far more cool than the magic-based.
I'd loved to see psionic githyankis with psi-chrystals and mentally dominated dragons...
But for the above mentioned reasons i understand why they couldn't do it.
