Can anybody tell me more about the origins of the Suel lich? Would it be totally illogical if I made Orcus the source of knowledge needed to become one.
Somewhere in the adventure "Headless" by James Jacobs it is mentioned that the artifact created by a derro orcus cultist was fashioned after one in the former Suel empire. (I don't have the issue with me, so please forgive me if I am wrong.) So there was a cult of the Demon Prince of Undeath.

It wouldn't be illogical, although the common thread is probably the Suel themselves and not Orcus. The Suel created the Derro as a magical crossbreed between humans and dwarves. The Derro probably re-created the artifact in immitation of their former masters, and used the power of Orcus to do so.
I'm just spit-balling here, but I think that the Suel liches are just the result of the Suel's more advanced magical research into Lichdom - their greatest acheivements seem to be more of a wizardly than clerical bent. Still there's nothing to say that their research wasn't handed down by Orcus, and if anyone wanted to duplicate the procedure in current times they would definitely have to turn to someone like Orcus in order to uncover the secret (who even if he didn't invent the process would know of it).

Hoping this is not a threadjacking...
I saw the thread title, and I've been trying to figure out what makes a Suel lich different from a normal one for a while now.
I can't find stats on them anywhere, so I must just not know where to look.
Anyone want to point me in the right direction?
You may now return to your normal thread.

The suel lich is a Greyhawk lich variant that's been around for quite some time (since the middle of 2nd edition, I believe). It's most recent incarnation was in issue #339 of Dragon.

I believe it's original incarnation was in Polyhedron #101.
