Quick one-shot campaign

I need to run a one-shot campaign (2-3 sessions with an option to be continued when our DM isn't around) and I was thinking of starting the players out with "roll initiative". My thought is maybe they are slaves being taken by caravan or ship to another location to be sold, when they see an opportunity to escape in a monstous raid/attack on the caravan/ship. They fight for their freedom with makeshift weapons and scrounge for equipment from the ruined caravan wagons or a few boxes that wash up on shore from the ship that got scuttled on the reef during the fighting. My question is who do I use for the bad monster(s)? I don't want to do the stereotypical goblin/orc/hobgoblin raiders. I was thinking that the ship is attacked by a sea monster or the caravan is attacked by some huge monster and then maybe some evil humanoids are drawn to the site in a few minutes from all the commotion.

I need ideas on monster, evil humanoids, and maybe some other interesting ideas. Please help.
Thanks all in advance.

An interesting twist to the 'In slavery' starting point would be to have the raiders be a rival slaving ring trying to get more 'product' and from the raid and fighting between themselves the party has an opportunity for escape. Perhaps have the first set of slavers be human and the raiding group be monsters of some sort...though I can't think of a good suggestion without looking some things up. I'll post back.

Maybe Neogi?

Liberty's Edge

Necromancer who wants to disrupt slave ring (they're cuttin' into his profits on zombie farmhands) sends passle of skeletons after them. First wave is a few rust monsters, who among other things wreak havoc by eating the chains off the prisoners, jack up the slavers' weapons, and generally make a nuisance of themselves.
The skeletons attack anybody and everybody; the whole thing is nothing but a confused brawl. The necromancer doesn't care, he's just there to stir up trouble. And skeletons are cool, cos you're better off pounding them with a makeshift club than a sword anyway.

I agree with the neogi slavers. Have the party being captured by them and being taken through the mountains to a cavern entrance or fortress leading to the underdark or such. Now, you've got a ton of options for the rival raiders. Frost giants from higher in the peaks with winter wolf pets, strafing wyverns or yrthaks, wave after wave of stirge. Even a dragon.

What if the caravan is travelling through a purple worm's territory? That would be a lot better than orc raiders.

Or you could use Yuan-ti.

I like it. I will be running Sunless Citadel and could throw in aa bunch of changes to make the Grove Master into a necromancer and his twig blights into small skeletons. I like it much, and it revamps the Sunless Citadel so I can use it again with people who may have been through it.

Great ideas all around and since my homebrew is filled with Yuan-ti I gave that idea alot of thought.
Thanks all and if anyone has any more let me have 'em!

I just thought it would be cool that for once the adventurer party would be relieved to see a rust monster...

That WOULD be a heckuva switch!

Dungeon Issue# ???

The Devils Box (for lvl2 characters)

This was a good one if I remember right, had good story and the possibility of a futher plot line after the conclusion of the adventure.

Plus its from Dungeon Magazine so you know its quality stuff.

I always wanted to continue the kobolds story from that one - maybe some day...

I ran The Devil's Box and I have to say that it was one of my gaming groups all-time favourite adventures.

Rich, I would absolutely love it if you would do a follow-up adventure featuring the kobolds. My players loved the two of them!

Perhaps its a few levels down the road and the two have gained abilities and/or classes from races of the dragon.

(can you say "Arch-Duke Chupo" ?)

I recall that one, but I can't find it. Which issue was it in? I think I may wanna run it if it is what I am recalling.

Devil Box is in #109, with the Soul Pillars; ish. has a green background and a gnarly dragon on the cover.
Gweeky little kobold bastwads.
