Think I want to have an archipelago on the way to the Isle of Dread, with lotsa crazy stuff happening there. Side treks, whatnot. Anybody think up a good island to stick in it? I want it to be a schizoid place, seemingly invented by a mad god with multiple personality disorder. Oh, yeah. There's a bermuda triangle-style interdimensional distortion in the middle of this set of islands.


Standard issue wizards' tower sticking out of the middle of the ocean. The tower goes 450 feet down all the way to the seabed floor. Population could be standard dungeon fare or it could be a pirate base, home for an extraplanar influence, etc....Tower has 64 levels, 45 below the surface of the ocean and the rest above.

Island of head shrinking pygmies led by a hag. The pygmies are small, high dex high movement foes fond of poisonous blow guns. The PCs are driven there by a storm/food shortage/food spoilage/leak in fresh water tanks/sabotage of water tanks.

If you can find it there's a nice Mark of Heroes RPGA adventure "Pirate's Bounty and the Isle of Fire". The second half of the adventure involves jungle trolls, dolgrims and a volcano.

Perhaps the mad god in your campaign turned all of the villagers into dolgrims. You can use the same stats, just describe them as having more than two heads, with each one representing a side of the mad god's personalities. Populate the rest of the island with Monsters of the Mind from Dragon 337 and add Far Realm cenebrotic blots from Dragon 330. For kicks make the island vaguely shaped like the head of a mind flayer.

The third adventure in the campaign is pretty much all about the trip to the Isle of Dread; the PCs will be passing by all sorts of crazy encounters and strange islands and whatnot.

I have to say, one of my fondest early Dungeon adventures involved a group of towers that were all linked with portals from one another. One had an orc horde around it, another a green dragon, so on and so forth. I remember one of the towers was partially submerged and used as a lighthouse, and was guarded by a wereshark ranger.

I don't know where I'm going with this...I think the APs just remind me of all the cool Dungeon adventures I have run through the years. >.<
