Wiki use for Campaign website?

3.5/d20/OGL

Hello all,

I'm hashing out ideas for my FR-SCAP campaign website, and a few people have suggested using a wiki instead of a static site.

I'm a fairly solid HTML coder, but I don't know SQL, which seems to be the primary stumbling block to using a wiki. I like the idea of my players being able to edit content themselves. To be honest, it is also not something that I want to have to spend a lot of money on, since I'm not getting paid for my endeavors. Any advice?

Try getting a free wiki space (there are a few) and see what you like. Using a wiki, in my experience, doesn't require knowledge of SQL. Setting it up is usually straightforward, unless you run into problems. Here's a list of free wikis if you're looking around.

For what it's worth, on my wiki I haven't had to do any SQL coding - just futzin' around with the skins to create a custom one, which is just straight CSS. (I use MediaWiki.)

Definitely. using the wiki is as easy as editing Wikipedia itself.

I use schtuff, fun & easy: http://www.schtuff.com

My site is: http://nehwon.schtuff.com/

There's little point to writing your own Wiki software, since software like Mediawiki (what Wikipedia runs on) is free. Setting up your own wiki with that isn't too difficult, just as long as you have a webhost supports PHP and MySQL. If not, you can get one quite cheaply ($5 monthly, or less).

I use Tiddlywiki (www.tiddlywiki.com) for my campaign. It doesn't need a server and it is free. It is a sensational piece of software.

Cheers, Chris.

I've been playing around with tiddlywiki (tiddlywiki.com) It is the easiest thing I have ever used. Much easier than HTML coding. I started small and as I needed to learn how to do something, I went to the self explanatory tutorial that told me exactly how to do formatting or tables or hyperlinks.

MUCH easier than a static website, but I have problems in that the people I play with aren't computer savvy and don't know how to configure their firewalls to allow scripts.

I have a Tiddlywiki that I keep my notes in offline. Is a Tiddlywiki editable online? I had thought that it wasn't.
