Druid HP

Got a silly question:

What happens to a druid's hitpoints when he or she transforms into another form? Do they retain their own HP, or assume the HD of creature? Do they get to roll new HP or assume the average HP?

Basically this is in reference to one of my players whom likes to transform into a small bird when things get's hairy. Does he suddenly become a super resilient and tough bird, or does he retain the weak fragility of the avian form?

If I was going to make a call on this, I would say he'd get the hit points of a bird.

The description of the Wild Shape ability states "like the polymorph spell, except as noted here". The polymorph spell says that you gain the STR, DEX and CON scores of the new form. So I'd say you get the hit points too.

And if you look at from the stand point of using polymorph as a weapon(Baleful Polymorph) it would realy suck if the one time the Truly Horrid Umber Hulk failed against your polymorph spell you turned it into a 270hp rat.

So if a Druid gets the strength of a bear, they should ge the hit points of a bird.

Not so, according to the 3.5 SRD, the Druid's ability functions as "alternate form", which has the following stipulation:

"Except as described elsewhere, the creature retains all other game statistics of its original form, including (but not necessarily limited to) HD, hit points, skill ranks, feats, base attack bonus, and base save bonuses."

the metalbard is correct. but your hp do change because you CON changes. so if you CON goes from 14 to 6 you are going to lose a shed load of hp (until you change back) and the reverse holds true for increasing your CON - you get more hp.

Now if a Level 10 druid with a 10 con turned into a rino (21 con) and got down to 5 hps would he die when he changed back to his normal 10 con form?

ie he gained 100 hps becoming a rino now he is -85 as a halfling druid

it is 50 hp i beleive as the con bonus goes from 0 to +5 and level 10.
but yes i beleive that if you change you die. kind of like the barbarian coming out of rage - see other discussion.

To stop all that nonsense the most recent errata from WotC states that your hit points don't change regardless of your change in Constitution. All other Constitution-based things do change, though (such as Fort saves, Concentration checks, etc.). This is definite errata.
