In Honor of the Fallen

3.5/d20/OGL

Our group is currently playing through Shackled City. One of the PC died early on and we have named our party in his honor. We are now called the Valas Avengers, or Avengers for short.

I have been searching everywhere to find a suitable prestige class for my character Coda (gaming journal is posted in that section). However, I have yet to find anything suitable. So I am thinking that I should create a new prestige class specific to our party and its history but I have no idea how to go about doing it. Can anyone offer any sugestions as to whereI should start?

It would be easier to help you if there was information already present. Anyway, you should look at your characters class and see how it relates to history. For example, my friend that joined us is playing a Half-Celestial/Half-Dwarven Cleric of Pelor. His history has already come into play: His entire clan was wiped out by an undead army led by my current and favorite villain, a crazed Cleric/Necromancer called Crow. He is building his character around that fact. I am going to build a prestige class specifically for him that centers around destroying undead. Does this help at all?

Coda is a Half-orc fighter. His background is that he is a temple orphan, raised by the clerics of Kord in Cauldron. He along others have embarked on the Shackled City Adventure Path. One of his friends was Valas, an Elven Paladin. Valas died whilst fighting an evil beast. My initial idea for the PrC would mean it focuses on fighting evil in general and evil beasts specifically.

I would suggest taking a few levels in ranger and then taking Stalker of Kharash from Book of Exalted Deeds. The ranger will get you the favored enemy beasts. The stalker has favored enemy-evil both give you the chance to track them down.

Thank you for the suggestion. I do not have that book but I will check with my group to see if anyone owns it.

Another thing to consider is how other characters that come after us can qualify into the Valas Avenger PrC. Since a large number of PrC's out there actually represent different orders or organization I would want to follow along those lines.

It's already done- Radiant Servant of Pelor. It sounds perfect for your dwarf. I've played alongside one all the way up to about 11th level or so, and I can tell you from experience that they are effectively an atomic bomb to undead when they turn, and the healing is second to none, no questions asked.

If my DMG wasn't fugged up (major water accident in my bedroom...I lost my bedroom) I would offer to draw a class up for you, see how you like it. I prolly still could, but it's up to you. I enjoy puting things like this together, that's why I'm a DM. Not to good on the RP though, but we're working on that.

Where can I find this class, Radiant Servant of Pelor? I do have issues with travel, as I have no vehicle to leave town, but if you can tell me what book or where on the web it might be located...? Please? And if someone could tell me how to quote others that would be very nice, aswell.

The Radiant Servant is in the Complete Divine- in fact, it's the priest on the cover. Basically, the entire class pumps up the cleric's turning and healing to awe-inspiring levels.

What edition is Complete Divine? Just wondering if I have to convert anything.

Scarab Sages

I believe it's 3.5

A friend on another forum has helped me develop this PrC.

Fist of Kord

The Fist of Kord (more commonly known as Kord’s Avenger) is a servant of Kord, the god of Strength. Unfortunately, many of those who seek to serve his causes have neither the wisdom nor charisma to become clerics or paladins. Occasionally, from the ranks of those who cry out for justice, Kord chooses one of great strength to rise from the ranks of the common and be empowered as a Fist of Kord. The avenger's duty, after righting any personal wrongs he has suffered, is to wander the land, righting wrongs and capturing or killing criminals.

Requirements:
To qualify for becoming a Fist of Kord, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Patron Deity: Kord
Alignment: Chaotic Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Neutral, True Neutral. (Or non-lawful, non-evil)
BAB: +3
Feats: Improved Unarmed Strike, Power Attack
Sense Motive: 3 ranks

Class Features
Alignment: See requirements
Hit Die: d10.

Class Skills
The Fist of Kord’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Gather Information (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (Religion) (Int), Jump (Str), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis) and Swim (Str).
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier.

Table: The Fist of Kord
Level Base Attack Bonus Fort Save Ref Save Will Save Special
1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Vengeful Fist
2nd +2 +3 +0 +0 Smite 1/day
3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 Retributive Strike 1/day
4th +4 +4 +1 +1 Smite 2/day
5th +5 +4 +1 +1 Instrument of Vengeance
6th +6/+1 +5 +2 +2 Retributive Strike 2/day
7th +7/+2 +5 +2 +2 Smite 3/day
8th +8/+3 +6 +2 +2 Eye for an Eye
9th +9/+4 +6 +3 +3 Retributive Strike 3/day, Smite 4/day
10th +10/+5 +7 +3 +3 Instrument of Vengeance (burst)

Abilities
Eye for an Eye (Su): Once per day, the Fist can call upon Kord to wreath him in the fires of vengeance. He is covered in white flames that shed light within 10' but produce no heat. The divine flames last one round per avenger level. During this time, any opponent that strikes the Fist with a melee attack suffers damage equal to 1d8 + avenger's class level, as the flames of vengeance themselves strike out. This damage is from a divine source and cannot be reduced with any form of fire resistance. The flames can only reach within a 5' radius, thus opponents striking with reach are not endangered.

Instrument of Vengeance (Su): The avenger can burn one of his Smite uses for the day, in order to turn his melee weapon into an instrument of vengeance. The weapon gains the "Flaming" ability for a number of rounds equal to the avenger's class level. This ability will stack with a magic weapon's enhancement bonus, but any other abilities or powers are rendered inoperative until the Instrument of Vengeance wears off. This ability is not cumulative with Bless Weapon or any other spell that might modify the weapon in any way. At 10th level, the avenger's Instrument of Vengeance adds the "Flaming Burst" ability instead of the "Flaming" ability.

Retributive Strike (EX): The Fist of Kord takes immediate vengeance on those who strike at him. Once per day, the Fist of Kord may take an attack of opportunity on an opponent who struck him in melee. However, the avenger's Retributive Strike is resolved AFTER the opponent's attack, and only takes effect if the avenger is still able to fight. More strikes per day are granted at later levels, and the ability can be used multiple times per round if the avenger has Combat Reflexes. However, no opponent can be subject to multiple attacks of opportunity in a single round.

Smite (Su): You gain the smite power, the supernatural ability to make a single melee attack with a +4 attack bonus and a damage bonus equal to your avenger level (if you hit). You must declare the smite before making the attack, and it is wasted if you miss. You gain more smite attempts per day with greater levels. While using this power, your weapon appears to be engulfed with the white fire of Kord (see Vengeful Fist).

Vengeful Fist (Su): The Fist may take a standard action to call upon the wrath of his god. His fists begin to glow with a divine white fire (shedding light in a 5-foot radiance). The flames give off no heat and cannot light anything on fire. While this ability is in effect, the Fist may choose to do lethal damage with his unarmed strike without taking the standard -4 penalty to hit. If doing subdual damage, the Vengeful Fist power causes an extra +1d4 points of subdual damage. The Vengeful Fist power can be used 3 rounds per day, per avenger level. The Fist may turn off this power as a free action.
