AoW backstory question—How old is the Ebon Traid?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

In Three Faces of Evil the adventure background says: “The Nethertome quoted an even older source, the fabled Way of the Ebon Triad, a blasphemous collection of apocalyptic essays, epic poems, and cryptographs that discuss the advent of an era of darkness called the Age of Worms…”

This gives me the impression that the Ebon Triad has been around for quite some time, at least a century I’d say, but I’m curious to know just how old the organization really is.

Anybody know?

The actual cult of the Ebon Triad is fairly young, but the materials the cult is based on are quite old. The architects behind the Ebon Triad have worked for many decades to perfect the cult's history, so that while the cult itself may point to texts like "The Way of the Ebon Triad" as proof that they've been around for ages... it's all lies. Even to the deluded members of the Triad itself.

We haven't really nailed down when the Cult itself was founded, but it was quite likely a very recent event; within the last decade or two.

that would make sense to me since in Greyhawk anyway Vecna's acension to godhood was somewhat recent.

Exactly. Although the idea for the Ebon Triad predates Vecna's ascencion to deityhood. The conspiracy-minded might even postulate that the cult of Kyuss had something to do with getting Vecna into the God-Seat just so they could pull off the Ebon Triad...

Sorry James,

I find it hard to believe that Kyuss had anything to do with getting Vecna into the God-seat.

Why would Kyuss would to "raise" Vecna anyway? Vecna would be much to clever for Kyuss. For example Vecna tricked/escaped the dark lords of Ravenloft and almost remade the multiverse in his image.

Kyuss didn't even have the forsight to keep himself from being imprisoned in the Spire of Long Shadows at the moment of his ascension.

In brief Vecna outsmarted the entire Greyhawk pantheon, the Dark Lords of Ravenloft and the Lady of Pain in Sigil. While Kyuss got beat by a bunch of Druids last time he poked his head out.

As you might have guessed I'm a big fan of the Big V. When it comes to universal plots and just plain coolness no one not Kyuss or anyone else can match him.

Well... Actually James is not asking you to believe it: he is simply quoting an imaginary "deluded cultist of the Ebon Triad" talking his sectarian talk and trying to reinterpret the history to fit his mad view of the world. :-)

More likely a Red Herring.

That sounds like a bunch of Vecnan propaganda.

****SPOILERS****

So essentially Lashonna and Mahuudril just took a pre-existing idea (the idea of uniting three evil deities of different alignment into one god) and made up there own cult based off of those ideas so that they could then manipulate it.

That makes me wonder--what if the writers of the "Way of the Ebon Triad" were actually talking about a demon prince, a duke of Hell, and a yugoloth lord uniting to form an evil god.

its not as far fetched as you may think. there have been references to a mysterious entity that has been supplying Vecna with secrets in two of the three modules/adventures involving him. perhaps that mysterious being was in fact Kyuss, especially since achieving godhood was one of those secrets (another being the key to his escape from Ravenloft to Sigil and still being able to retain his divine status, done in Die, Vecna, Die).

The entity you refer is called the Serpent. The Serpent is thought to be the incarnation of Magic or perhaps one of the ancient brethern like the Lady of Pein. Some have speculated that the Serpent is in fact Asmodeous (See Guide to Hell)who appears as the Overlord of Hell but is in fact the incarnation of Lawful Evil.

I doubt Kyuss who himself is trapped in the Spire of Long Shadows could help engineer an escape for Vecna from the demiplane of dread. It would take a grander mind.
