My group will be 9th level when they start Test of the Smoking Eye. Do you think that is too low (it's listed as 10-12 IIRC)? I don't remeber seeing the "scaling the adventure" sidebar for this one in Dungeon (away from my books, so I could be mistaken) so I was thinking that I might have to throw in a side trek or two.
I suppose if Kaurophon is a full participant it might not be so bad, but then I might have to level him up as well...
Thoughts?

I had a group go through as 9th level, but there were 7 of them, 1 with Leadership. They were fine. In fact, they're going into Lords of Oblivion at level 12, rather than 13, and they should be okay ... I guess the extra PCs lessen the xp share per person ...
Something you could do is throw extra 'random encounters' trekking through Occipitus to feed their XP. It also would emphasize how dangerous the place is ...

I had a similar issue as the OP, only one for my 5 PC's were 10th at the beginning.
But, like you said, adding Kaurophon as an NPC Sorc for most encounters, with Displacement, Blur, Cone of Cone, Greater Invis, etc, can really aid or beef up the party.
Also, I too the liberty to add an extra few traveling Random Encounters into the parties open travel time to the Citidale of Feathers. About 4 or 5, including some Ambush Drakes, a Lava Ooze, and a couple of Arrow Demons in the forest of bones. I lessened the number of enc participants to make is a doable challenge, as many one enc randoms per day are, but by the time they reached the Citidale of Feathers to begin the trial, I let them camp and train/gain exp and that was enough to boost several of them to 10th to continue the meat of the Adventure.
