Never thought I'd say this..... but the new Deicide album is AWESOME! Super-heavy production job, completely incomprehensible vocal and suitably over-the-top lyrics combine for the most pleasant surprise in years. Best song is probably "Homage for Satan", though the insane cover of Deep Purple's "Black night" is pretty cool as well. What could be next - a good Cannibal Corpse record? Huzzah for improbable comebacks!

Some nostalgic soulful lyrics today.
"It's three o'clock in the morning
And i'm on the streets again
I disobeyed another warning
I should have been in by ten
Now i won't get out until sunday
I'll have to say i stayed with friends
But it's a habit worth forming
If it means to justify the end"
and
"There was a young girl, whos heart was a frown
cause she was crippled for life,
And she couldnt speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living,
So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled you wont hurt me no more
But then a sight shed never seen made her jump and say
Look a golden winged ship is passing my way
And it really didnt have to stop, it just kept on going..."

I'm currently on a kick of David Bowie, The Fall, and the mix cd that my sister made me for Christmas, which includes not only a picture of Nancy Reagan on Mr. T's lap for the liner notes, but also work from:
Sonic Youth
Beirut
Voxtrot
East River Pipe
Destroyer
Benji Cossa
The Fall
Eric Bachmann (from Crooked Fingers)
Yo La Tengo
Superchunk
Voxtrot is probably my favorite of the mix.

Savatage "When the Crowds are Gone"
I never wanted to know
Never wanted to see
I wasted my time
Till time wasted me
Never wanted to go
Always wanted to stay
'Cause the person I am
Are the parts that I play
So I plot and I plan
Hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night
Filled with unfinished dreams
I'm holding on tight
To a world gone astray
As they charge me for years
I can no longer pay

"Blood Mountain" is the best album of 2006 - nobody else is even close. And, though Krokus has a neat little song, you'll be better off if you go with the Motorhead tune instead. Just stay away from Aerosmith's "Eat the rich"...
I saw one episode of that show last week, and it does make you wanna blow things up...

drunken_nomad |

Another Savatage fan? Good for you! "If I go away..."
Try Nightwish- epic heavy metal from Finland; their last three albums Once, Century Child, and Oceanborn are well worth a listen.
Nemo! That album "Once" was pretty dam cool. I heard they lost their singer and didn't even know there was anything new...New singer good? Or did they re-form?
You see The Fishmaster ?
It's time to do the Thorazine shuffle!!

and now I wanna find Krokus "eat the rich."
Dude! The singer is using a mace as a mic. What was the one about the car? "Ready to Burn"! There was a small radio station around here that played that every morning before school back in '84-'85 sometime...LOVED IT!

I have now- that’s pretty funny!

The band and the singer parted company in late 2005. I had a look at their official website just now. It says (as of Jan 16th) that they’ve received more than 2000 demos, and that:
“The new vocalist will be announced at the end of May, together with the release of a new single.”
It seems that they’ve been recording an album at Abbey Road Studios (London). There’s a reference to a new album called “Crows Fly Black” by Tarot, which might be the band without a female vocalist. Might be worth checking out.
What are Mastodon like?

www.kcdx.com Great Classic rock radio. They talk too much now, though. It used to be once every 1 1/2 hours they said "KCDX 101FM Florence Arizona" as required by law. Now, every 10 or so songs they have some 5-10 second commentary that says you are listening to KCDX.

Never heard of them. I heard of UFO and Gary Moore...
Gary Moore rocks. I think the U. S. market is kinda weird to a lot of European groups.
Correction: Gary Moore used to rock - especially when he was with Thin Lizzy. These days, ole' Gary is pretty sad; I saw him at a small blues festival in Norway a few years ago, and now he's just a short fat guy who plays "Still got the blues" four times in the same set (no joke!) while not playing "Parisienne walkways", "After the war" or even "Over the hills and far away". WTF? Get back to your senses, Gary!
UFO were OK. Historical anecdote: Michael Schenker left Scorpoions for UFO back in the 70ies because he thought they would be the bigger band. Sucker...

Gary Moore was roXXor! His version of Little Darlin, Little Girl in Bloom, Sitamoia...and the almighty Black Rose: A Rock Legend is amazing! Dunno about now tho.
As for US and foriegn markets, how about Japan-Rock?
Anthem, X(Japan), Tusk of Jaguar (Akira Takasaki), EZO, Luna-Sea, Malice Mizer(though I'm not into this group), and the gods of J-metal, LOUDNESS!

I remember back when Vivian Campbell was playing for Dio, I think Hit Parader or somebody did an interview and called him "the best guitarist in heavy metal," and Viv Campbell said that that's not him, if it's anybody it's Gary Moore. So I had to go find out who Gary Moore was...
Love Viv! And Dio's newest axe-slinger (well, return of) Craig Goldy. I also really like reading stuff like that where the guy doesn't take the credit and names his influences or less known contemporaries. That gives me something new to track down and devour.
Just found out about a 80's glam band called Tuff Luck and found a couple snippets online...pretty cool. Kinda like Crue, early Dokken. Sleazy lyrics and cool tricks on guitar and drums. My kind of stuff!

Some old, home-burned mix stuff a friend made for me- I don't know who half of these bands are. It contains the song that made me appreciate girls with braces, though. Fantastic, fantastic song.

One of my favorites is the four disk "Message in a Box" set that the Police put out a couple years back (or at least their record company did). It has pretty much every song they ever recorded. The only problem I ever had, was that some songs get repeated, but as some are studio versions and some were live, I try not to let it bother me that much.
Of course, I am also thrilled by the rampant rumors flowing that the Police are finally considering a reunion tour. If it happens, it would finally be something I'd camp out over night to get tickets for.

"Holy crap! The guy from Labyrinth turned into an EAGLE!!"- The Venture Brothers, "Confrontation at Cremation Creek, part 2"
David Bowie rocks.
Also great: Andrew Bird- "The Mysterious Production of Eggs" and "Armchair Apocrypha" I never thought whistling could be beautiful, but there it is. The album artwork for "Mysterious Production of Eggs", provided by silkscreen artist Jay Ryan, doesn't hurt either.
I want to see Bird in concert the next time he's on tour; apparently, he first plays the violin live and records it on stage and then samples it while he plays the rest of the song on different instruments.

Yesterday I listened to Der Ring des Nibelungen in its entirety. Not a fan of anti-semites like Wagner but the work was worth it.
I'd been listening through my new Stevie Wonder best of box set before that.
Got that Gnarls Barclay CD for the song Crazy but three listens in and it's already played out for me.
The week before that it was all metal, Cat Stevens, and KC & the Sunshine Band.
What can I say? I want what I want when I want it.
