WHO'S THE MACK?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

As far as I know, the Darkhold zhentarim are Cyric worshippers, yet in Dungeon Magazine issue #187 "The Raiders of Galath's Roost", the zhent commander of the citadel, which by the way answers to Darkhold, is a priest of Bane. How can this be?

"Let me explain...no, that will take too long, let me sum up..."

The Zhentarim are currently a split faction. Previously, the Zhentarim was all-Banites. After the "death" of Bane, part of Bane's divine portfolio was subsumed by Cyric, thief-turned-god. As such, the Zhentarim turned to worship Cyric. After Bane's rebirth from his son, Iyachtu Xvim, Bane sent a "worship me or you'll-burn-forever-in-the-pits-of-hell" to all the worshippers of Bane-formerly-known-as-Xvim. One of Bane's goals is to reclaim the Zhentarim under his rule, instead of Cyric's.

So Cyric & Bane, and thus his followers, don't get along too well. It's very likely that any Zhentarim will be split along these two factions if they're encountered, each claiming to be in the right.

Note to Cyric & Bane - "don't split the party vote, man!!"

I *hate* when I get those memos. I never really know how to respond.

Depends on whether or not you think the person sending the memo can walk the walk to go along with talking the talk. :D

Reminds me of Eddie Izzard's run on Anglican vs Catholic church routine.

"Cake or death?"
"Um...cake please!"
"YOU! Cake or DEEEEEEATH!"
"Uh, I'll have the cake too!"

Another Izzard bit that tends to pop up in game is his bit on flags. (You'd have to listen to Eddie to get it. :-P)

Do you have a /flag/?

No flag, no country. Those are the rules! (That I just made up.)

Who nees flags when you have the Tyrant's Fist?

Back on topic, one of the things I love most about 3.0/3.5 FR is that they shook up so many of the groups that had been out there for so long. The Zhentarim are fractured, the Harpers have split into the Moonstars and the Harpers, the Elves have kinda-sorta-maybe stopped their Retreat, and Moradin's Blessing has hit the dwarves.

I think change is good for a fantasy world. Too much static and it gets old.
