Is there some author notes on this class?
In particular, I was wondering if there are any thoughts on how a player can optimizing/min-maxing it to make it a very effective adventurer?
I have been taking a look at it and have come up with one way of doing it, but I was curious if there are others in detail?
The way that I looked at it was to treat it as a mainly a "buffer"/support adventurer that relies more on indirect and cunning methods. A closer look at the urban companion and urban shape does seem to allow for some interesting possibilities though they require a bit of time and effort to pull off correctly, as is the rest of the class abilities.

The real thing to think about is not how to min/max your druid. Just play to his strengths, he doesn't have to be the solo adventurer and he does serve a greater role as a support caster.
I strongly suggest any and all buff spells, and I also strongly suggest conjuration spells that create barriers or concealment to aid your party. You should consider using him to spread your enemies thin and to make your party more powerful.
Also, I strongly suggest (if you have the Spell Compendium) that you consider making a Conjurer for an alternate idea as a support mage. If you focus his spell selection on the fog spells, walls, and teleportation, I think you will be very pleased at the great effect you can have on the fight without ever dealing a single point of damage.
If you want to deliver the damage, get the kills, and bask in the glory of your power, I strongly suggest against druids in general. If you want damage, nothing beats an evoker.

I mixed mine with Fighter and Bloodhound to make a detective-like hero in Shackled City. In terms of party roles, I'm the Face/Diplomat, Investigator and Tracker, and #2 line-fighter (plunked fighter-feats into Two-weapon fighting and W.Focus (q-staff)). I also do some buffs.
I just wish the spell list could have kept up with Spell Compendium.

I'm going to look for the Dragon Compendium at my FLGS when I get a chance, but just in case I can't find it there: what issue of Dragon did the Urban Druid first show up in?
#317.
If you can't find it at your FLGS, remember that you can always pick it up at Paizo.com. ;)
It won an ENnie, you know. An ENnie.
Just sayin'.
An ENnie!

I ordered it...
...then looked around and found the issue in question. I'm sure the Compendium has plenty of other useful things in it as well. I'm gonna trust you this time, McArtor. You let me down and you're cut from the team, though!
