Is theTalismen of the Sphere ever going to be used?

Hello all, I'm not sure if this question has been asked and answered already but I was wondering if the the official modules of the AP ever have a point where the talismen of the sphere will become useful? My party went through quite a lot of trouble to retrieve the loop from Allustan and I don't want it to sit and gather dust in their inventory. I don't see any previews which mention it being used and was just wondering if I would have to come up with my own little side adventure?

i'm going to have to assume that there will be a sphere of annihilation somewhere. ;)

It absolutely will come into play.

... Aaaand one of the last enemies will have a Rod of Cancellation handy...

It comes back into play in A Gathering Of Winds... the players use it as a key to free Allustan from a trap, and I believe in the process it becomes 'charged', becoming a fully-functional talisman. WHICH MEANS: there's a sphere in someone's future.

This talisman-charging happened in the original draft of AGoW, as documented by ASEO's playtest notes (available on these boards) but no longer occurs in the published adventure. Instead, at the conclusion of the adventure, the spirit of Icosiol activates the talisman. Less flavorful, but perhaps it makes more sense. Interestingly, there is still a chandelier-like object in AGoW that looks like it is made of talismans of the sphere.

It also means that if your group hasn't started the campaign yet, and one of the players has desperately wanted to play an entropomancer for some time, this is the best time to suggest they pursue it.

Also, it's a good idea even if you're already playing and you want to replace a deceased character.

Was there ever an alternite plan for the sphere of annihilation other than the (pretty lame) tomb of horrors suggestion?

Another thread suggested that the sphere appeared after the vortex of unlife is destroyed, an idea that I quite like.

There is an excellent adventure in the Tome of Magic with a sphere as a prize. That is the one I plan on using. It is in the shadow magic section.

I thought the Tomb of Horrors suggestion was great, especially since I ran the Return to the Tomb of Horrors in our previous campaign. That connection between Tomb and Age of Worms allows me to bring back NPC characters from the previous campaign, which I can't wait to do.

Nope; we always intended to have the PCs go to the Tomb of Horrors to snatch that sphere out of the devil mouth. I didn't think it was a lame bit at all. Which is why it got published! :)

Having the sphere appear after the vortex is destroyed works, but it feels a bit too deus ex machina for me to have one just happen to appear right there for the PCs exactly when they need it.

Personally I thought this was brilliant as well.

My players (we completed the campaign about a year ago) really liked going to the Tomb of Horrors. One knew of the adventure while the other (only has played since 3rd edition) did not. But even so it led to some great talk about Gygaxian style dungeons and D&D history.

That bit tied the whole campaign together for us. Early on, I'd substituted a high-level PC wizard from the homebrew campaign for Manzorian. All the players know that he had been on the quest for the Rod of Seven Parts and survived the Return to the Tomb of Horrors (back in 2e), so his knowledge of the Rod fragments and location of the sphere didn't smack of a McGuffin on my part.
