Diameter of Cauldron Lake

Shackled City Adventure Path

My players are math nerds.

This has presented a problem, as they're academically suspicious of the whole "use the wands to lower the waters" schtick. They've spent the last few sessions wondering why they don't build a system to deal with overflow, instead of spending hundreds of thousands of gold pieces on wands.

So, my question is thus:
I have a feel for the size of Cauldron's lake as it exists in the magazines, but in the book version of Cauldron (which I'm running) Cauldron is a good deal larger. How large is Cauldron lake, in the version of Cauldron presented in the hardcover?

So am I. That's not a bad thing. =)

Well, the map layout indicates that it is approximate 1500' in diameter and is roughly circular, so using basic geometry:

750 (radius) x 3.14159 (pi) ^2 = 5,551,643.09

Approximately 5.5 million square feet in area.

That being said, the volume is completely different, as the lake descends at least 1,300' below the surface (p. 112, SCAP Hardback.) It also connects to various underground lakes and rivers...so the thaw pours water into the water table throughout the region, which backs up into the underground lakes, which backs up into the caldera, which pushes the water level of Crater Lake higher and higher...

Thank you. I think.

Where are you from Zonk? Out of interest, I'm leading the campaign as well at I have a hunch that you speak Dutch from the site. I myself am from Belgium and would be fun if I could mail about the Scap for questions and suggestions etc, in Dutch, to lessen the misinterpretations, and I'd love to hear about changes you made of how your group handles situations. :)

It is for D&D (and probably for most RPGs) :P

*laughs* That being said, I wish I had my PHB at work with me today. (I almost can't believe I just typed that.) I'd love to work out exactly how many spells would have to be cast to affect a volume of water that large.

I know some people have posited the thought that wands are too expensive to constantly purchase, and that a rod or staff of some kind would be better, but I believe that Cauldron is a bit too small for that sort of purchase - it's maximum gp amount is somewhere around 5,000gp, isn't it?

Or am I thinking of AoW? *head hurts*

If it really becomes a sticking point for players, suggest that they ask someone about it in game if they can't figure it out. Once they do have that person laugh and then say that it took a while, but that one of the elementalists in the vein of Surabar Spellmason was able to create harmonic enhancers spread out around the diameter of the lake. Once these enhancers are activated by the use of wands they don't allow water to pass above or past them.

I also would say that once they wands are used you really have to go for one of two visuals. If you want the water in the lake lowered back to an acceptable level then explain how the water is being forced out the natural drainage and huge gushers of water are seen lower on the mountain. If you want the water just held back, describe the cylinder of water that towers over the people as they go about their business. Perhaps individual priests then patrol this looking for spots that might start buckling and a single wand use is used to restore that one spots water wall.

If that is your game's site and you are who I think you are Zenke/Zonk, can't you just tell them to "shut it" in your usual amusing way? :)

Usually involving certain parts of your anatomy!

I'm a bit of a fan and I come back to read the Wiki every week.
