Integrating new PCs into the Age of Worms

Age of Worms Adventure Path

well, as we all know, the Age of Worms is a pretty deadly campaign, and has claimed many player character lives. two of my group have lost characters already, and we have yet to even progress beyond The Whispiring Cairn.

i'll start out, with tales of how i've integrated the two new characters:

----------------------

Jantris, a monk of extrordinary martial talents (gestalt fighter/monk), just couldn't fit in to Diamond Lake's Garrison. she adamantly refused all weapons and armor, and though she was stealthy enough to join the small cadre of scouts in diamond lake, she couldn't track to save her life. the rest of the group, checking a few old records about the area (looking for more information on the whispiring cairn), could hear the shouts of the commanding officer from across the practice yard. fortunatly for all involved, the solution of sending Jantris on "special duty" occured to Merris (the cheif scout of the garrison) - his aquaintence Allustan had mentioned that his new apprentice (a different character - Carawynn McCormick) might need a little protection in her investigation of a nearby tomb. Though Carawynn was distrustfull at first, her barbarian compaion Cruutmal quickly warmed to the new addition, after a rowdy bar brawl resulted in a very unconsious barbarian.

----------------------

Theo, Devout cleric of heronious, had a mission - to bring law and order to the frontier around greyhawk, starting with diamond lake. Upon arriving in Diamond Lake, he heard a nasty rumor - a local misanthrope was torn to shreds inside the residence of one of the town's more affluent citizens. Investigating the death of Cruutmal the barbarian, it was only natural that he question the deceased's companions quite thoroughly. while investigating the mysterious death, he learned that the corruption in Diamond Lake was much deeper than he initially thought, and decided to help the adventuring party in their investigation into an incedent of graverobbing...

How did the characters die?

Thats Right!

I don't come to a DMs forum to hear about how your PCs lived...I want to here about how they died!

I love threads that read like the lyrics to Leonard Cohen's Who by Fire. Except with more detail and featuring belching Dragons.

Well I found it interesting, it could be a possible help for DM's that need to introduce new characters, as was probably the idea of the original post. There are enough threads with deaths of player characters.

None of my Characters have died yet but if (when?) they do I had thought up a trio of replacements from the swamps to the south:

1 - Obed of the Mistmarsh - Male Human Barbarian, son of the Chief, proud and arrogant. While out tracking down a Lizardfolk sighting near his tribal home (a deliberate ruse), Obed's entire tribe is wiped out. Fear and shame drive him north, away from his beloved marsh, nursing a genocidal hatred of all things reptilian. Eventually he finds himself in the taproom of the Feral Dog, looking for an opportunity to reclaim his dignity, self-respect and ultimately his homeland.

2 - Senegoid the Silent - Male Hobgoblin Ranger - see above for background and motivations. His favored enemy = humanoid (humans) or humanoid (reptilian).

3 - Irtsaw the Irritating- Female 1/2 Orc Druid - Hag tutored. Escaped swamp and servitude after Lizardfolk/Ilithane intervene to kill/distract her Hag mistress. Also ends up in the Feral Dog with her trusty Wolf companion, Cuff.

These three will all have built in motivation for the 3rd installment, EaBWK, which will make the transition from Diamond Lake to the Mistmarsh more logical and organic. Those are just a few possibilities. Here is another:

4 - Falling Leaf - Female Human Monk - Repulsed by the drug trafficing, power politics and crass materialism of the Twilight Monastery, the lawful good novice, Falling Leaf, strikes out alone with dreams of founding her own monastery one day. Her order will require the Sacred Vow, Vow of Poverty, and Vow of Abstinance from all initiates (see Book of Exalted Deeds for feats of the same names). Perhaps, Mayor Neff could offer the use of the Old Observatory to Falling Leaf (either before or after the party cleans it out) as a base of operations for her order. Remember Neff hates and fears the Twilight Monastery so tweaking Izenfen by sponsering a 'rival' order might be right up his alley.

The AoWAP is filled with hooks like these to help fire the imagination of players and dm's alike.

Good Luck and Game on!

While there is some truth to my statement its meant to be taken pretty tongue in cheek.
