City of Greyhawk

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Okay, something that I'd really like to see is a revisiting of the City of Greyhawk. (I did notice the Free City in a recent Dragon, but that was designed for Age of Worms.)

Now, my reasoning is that the Forgotten Realms recently got its own Waterdeep hardcover, which I have enjoyed immensely (good job, WotC). Eberron has its Sharn hardcover (I believe). The City of Greyhawk should get its own update, in Dragon Magazine, since we won't get it anywhere else.

And now would be a good time for such an update, with a Greyhawk guru at the helm of both magazines. A detailed enough article, with some key personalities and organizations updated to 3rd Edition would go over big time with Greyhawk fans. Plus it would encourage such fans to take a closer look at the Age of Worms Adventure Path.

You could even create a special City of Greyhawk adventure that could stand-alone or mesh well with Age of Worms.

Of course, a full-sized poster map would be a must. The designers could even put a minis map in with Dungeon Magazine.

Just a suggestion...

I am in total agreement! A 300 page, hardcover, $35.00 issue of Dragon Magazine detailing the City of Greyhawk would be even better.

I'd go 39.95 for such a treasure. I'd preorder the idea itself if I could.

Mmm...oh yeah. Monte Cook's been doing interesting things with his Ptolus book, as far as layout & such are concerned.

300 page book...forty bucks. No problem. Hardcover, color interior. Pretty Shinies!!

Yes, that would be a great product! Erik???

Sure a great idea, I´m all for it! But i fear that there might be issues with Living Greyhawk that would make such a work difficult, if not impossible. And even if it would be possible, it would be out 2008 at best - just in time for D&D4 ;-)(And if you do it, be sure to include an aerial view like in the box - that was great! ;-))

I am totally about the pretty shinies. Didn't Dom Deluise lend voice to an animated crow that loved shiny things in The Secret of Nimh?

If that's a false memory, it's an elaborate one.

If ever I am rich enough to buy ownership of the D&D product line, I will retain all of you and expand your powers.

Disappointing....oh well, some more of my money THEY won't be getting--'cuz I ain't gonna buy no Eberron stuff and the FR have passed into the hands of another DM in my circle of gaming friends, so I'm not buying any FR stuff either.

It just seems so darn silly--Eberron has its fans and FR has its fans and Greyhawk has its fans. I seriously doubt a Greyhawk product from WotC or Paizo would decrease sales of the other lines, but then again I'm not "in the industry."

...and yes, if I ever have enough money to buy the D&D product line....well, I...wouldn't do it because nothing ruins hobbies quicker than turning them into jobs.

Truer words never spoken. Can't have easy revenue coming in, right? I wonder if having once thrown Greyhawk to the Living they now feel it a logistical nightmare to reel it back in to create a line of less mutable printed products for us Dead? Seems easy as Pai-zo to me.

As for ruining a hobby by turning it into a job... I wouldn't be that kind of hand's on boss. I'd be more the "Create, oh my monsters of imagination! Spawn legions of the lurking and go forth with righteous armies to vanquish them! And uh... (ahem)... no more awful sfx dependant D&D movies. Six Million Dollar Man meets Sasquatch was more believable. We're in the business of suspending disbelief, folks! We're getting Phillip Seymour Hoffman to play the Hobgoblin Chieftan in the next one! Bono will debut as a Gibbering Mouther. We'll use real blood for the battle scenes. You can get real blood somewhere, right? Leave the cinematic formulas behind because boy meets girl might sell in Idaho but boy meets succubus is what our people, ma and pa wargamer, wanna see! It's genius! Genius! Who's with me?!"

This question is kind of off topic but its something I've been wondering. As far as I've been told Dungeon is considered official canon by wizards which is why many people now accept things like the Lich Queen of the Githyanki being defeated. However, if this is true what happens when Dungeon has something huge happen (like say....the total takeover of Greyhawk by a worm infested undead hoarde) and this totally fools with the turf of Living Greyhawk. Which comes out on top?

Expanding on this good question, if the Age of Worms AP ever became a Paizo hardcover, would that not then repeat the precedent of The Shackled City AP, proving that alternate Greyhawk universes, one for the tournament players and one for us freestylers, can indeed co-exist (without major stock loss or mass suicides)? On such a golden day, if ever this was the case, an exciting new product line would firehose us off our seats.

Sniffs sadly at what could be.

Not even an RPGA update?

OFF TOPIC--APOLOGIES TO THE REST OF THE BOARD!

Hey Lilith--I sent you an e-mail to your darkmoon e-mail account about homebrewing, but I never got a reply. Maybe your spam filter picked it up. If you want, send me an e-mail to farewell2kings (AT) gmail (DOT) com

I just started back up again...got a batch of IPA going right now, got some Aussie Bitter up next and a batch of mead to be made around Thanksgiving day. Would love to share some recipes and ideas.
