Devil spawn, Age of Worms, and Forgotten Realms

Age of Worms Adventure Path

For my players' AoW game, I want to create an interesting, new, and recurring villain - perhaps a devil spawn - and I'd like to get your input! I'm thinking maybe a child of Belial and maybe a warped human priestess or sorceress? One of the PCs is a paladin of Lathander, and I think a "temptation" angle might be interesting... but I'd be fine on switching to another diabolic or daemonic parent if someone has a really spiffy idea.

Yeah... I know this is a concept that's been done to death, so I want to make this more than just a typical devilspawn. Any thoughts...? I just bought the BoVD for extra source material, and there are some very interesting possibilities there. But I don't have access to Exalted Deeds or Complete Divine, unfortunately.

Here are some things I'm working with: my AoW is set in the Forgotten Realms (just started Whispering Cairn), and the players are all standard PC types (no monstrous characters or the like... just three humans, an elf, and a half-elf). We're also very role-play heavy (not rule-heavy). Progress in levels is done more slowly, with several plotlines running at the same time (with AoW being the major plot). They like a lot of character development. Most importantly, since it's FR, I don't really want the villain to be a carbon copy of "Aliiza" originally from Hellgate Keep.

Eventually, I'll want to scare them with a possible rebirth of Myrkul and Bhaal... and actually, I just might do this, just to start an Epic campaign extension.

This is the first time I've run a really dark campaign, with so much evil, undeath and vileness, and I want to lay it on thick! I'd appreciate ideas and feedback - thanks!

You *really* need to get the Dicefreaks: The Gates of Hell book. It is a fan-based take on the Nine Hells, and it is the best piece of work ever done on the subject. I have all the files, if you want them. I could email them to you, zipped. Be sure to thank them authors, though ;-)

Sounds interesting! Is this a kind of "freeware" product? If so, I'd really appreciate it a lot! My email is: dencoffj (at) thuntek (dot) net. Thanks!

If it helps for "hooks" on adding a devil-spawn to torment the party, here are the PCs involved in my AoW game:

NG Half-Elf (gold) male Wizard, and party leader
- citizen of Silverymoon
CG Elf (gold) female Bard
- a granddaughter of Elorfindar Floshin, she studied at Silverymoon
LG Human male Paladin of Lathander
- from Waterdeep (and a son of the Eirontalar noble house)
NG Human female Cleric of Lathander
- from Daggerford
CG Human female Rogue
- from Daggerford

Notably, the paladin's a new addition to the group... that player's previous half-elf fighter completely bit it when they encountered the acid beetle swarm.

And here are some secondary plotlines that I'll be running in concert with AoW:

a) Requiem for Gwydion (aka: who poisoned the noble family of Daggerford? - A woman apothecary who turns out to be a Red Wizard; and they'll also find out that Bronwyn secretly had a daughter with one of her "Iron Edge" adventuring companions, so there *is* an heir to the duchy).

b) the Voices of the Lost: at some point, they'll need to discover and use an ancient "song path" of the elves, with information provided by a kiira stone, and perhaps get some help from Elorfindar Floshin.

c) the Fallen Kingdom: an adaptation of the mini-adventures originally in "N5 - Under Illefarn", including a temporary poisoning of the Delimbiyr River after a small earthquake at Laughing Hollow.

d) the Nether Vault of Delimbiyr: aka the Vault of Ail'daen, a long-ruined tiny personal vault / lab of a Netherese archmage... complicated by a particularly cruel Shadowvar shadow-mage (but not a full Shade, just a "regular" Netherese) who is on the hunt to reclaim ancient magic for his dark city.
