Dice anyone?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

With the Wormfood articles to support the current adventure path I was half-expecting there to be some article on gambling in Dragon. Diamond Lake (the setting for Age of Worms adventure path, for those who don't know) is a poor man's Las Vegas. I'm sure gambling is covered in such places as BoVD, etc (I don't own that, so I'm just guessing here) and I don't want to open a can of worms over "evil" practices getting support from Paizo, but just a run-down on how a player and DM can get through the role-playing process of gambling in the game would be appreciated. Stopping the game to actually PLAY poker, craps, etc is sorta a killjoy to me & my gaming group but "just roll your 'gambling' skill check" is sorta lame. Isn't there some middle ground here?

Gather Information to learn the basics of a game.

Wrestling matches - grapple checks (Greco-Roman style, not WWF style).

Ranged attack rolls for darts, knife-throwing (anything that requires to hit a bullseye, really).

Sense Motive and Bluff for poker and card games. Maybe Intimidate.

Sheer Dumb Luck(tm) for dice or roulette-style games. That is, unless you want them to find out if the games are rigged (which could be a whole side-quest in and of themselves), in which Spot, Sense Motive and Gather Information are all useful.

You could make up a Profession (Gambler) skill for professional gambler types.

The old rule-of-thumb +2/-2 circumstance bonuses would be handy in this instance.

There were a few dice based games recently - I don't remember if they were in a Dragon Wormfood article, or one of the adventures. One of them was called Fireball - chuck 5d6, highest total wins. Another used a bunch of d6's to represent creatures and such. Looked interesting.

Yeah. I remembered that too; especially the creature one.

It was in a Wormfood along with some other gambling-esque stuff. Also, you could check out the BORL (Book of Rougish Luck, by Malhavoc Press) for detailed rules on gambling as well as a whole boatload of interesting and useful things.
