shields with animate enhancement on

3.5/d20/OGL

if you have say a large steel shield +1 with the animate enhancement on, can you use a two handed weapon efficiently.
e.g. how would you weild a greatsword with good effect with an animated shield in the way. where would the shield be to give you the ac bonus without getting in the way on the sword.
as for example when you use a tower shield with any weapon you also grant your foe ac bonuses and cover, so i would have thought using an animated large steel shield while using a two handed sword would have a similar effect?

I suppose a DM could come up with the sort of ruling you suggest, and you have a point, but I would just assume that the shield's enchantment bonus also prevented it from getting in the way of the wielder.

I don't have my books with me right now, but I do believe that it mentions in the DMG that an Animated Shield floats around the body and protects where needed. I would assume that if an enhancement could do this, then it could also stop the shield from getting in the way of a weapon.
But then again, it is up to the DM of that campaign to decide what he feels is right. That's what makes D&D so great.

A bit from my Hoarde.
