a watchful eye wreathed in flames = Cliché

Shackled City Adventure Path

the original symbol for Cauldron is a watchful eye wreathed in flames. I, and my players, find this a little overdone (lord of the rings and all). Any suggestions for a better symbol for Cauldron?

A sleepy eye wreathed in sunflowers?

Scarab Sages

A cute little squirrel holding a blood-dripping machete.

Or, on the not as wise-ass side... a spiral of lava swirling in toward a blue pool.

A triangle and a circle (or possibly half-circle). The circle just covers up the tip of the triangle. Represents the mountain and lake.

Optional additions: To the left a tree and to the right a miner's pick to represent major industries. Alternately, the miner's pick and something like a wand, potion vial, or beaker to represent the interests of the dwarven and gnome founders.

I use Greyhawk City's symbol for Cauldron. This is a link of chains over a castle and turrets above six "coins". The "shackeled city" image was too hard to resist.

I too was not fond of the "watchful eye wreathed in flame" symbol for the city. The fact that the town is on top of a volcano is foreshadowing enough that there may be some fire involved at some point. Surabar Spellmason was obviously fond of the element of earth, having built both the Basalt Bastions in Redgorge and the Lakeside Pavilion in Cauldron.

In the end i made my own symbol, using a stylized eye from some vision advertisement. I wanted to be sure the eye looked human, and not monstrous or demonic at all. I also wanted to incorporate some brown into it, to represent Surabar's chosen element. In the end, i tried to make the inner-eye a small version of Cauldron from above, with the lake as the pupil.

Cliche? Yeah, but you could do a whole campaign about how the whole town is secretly dedicated to the Elder Elemental Eye! Same (or at least similar) symbol if I recall correctly. Vhalantru? Secretly Imix, Prince of Evil Elemental Fire! Final baddie? Aspect of Tharizdun! Shopkeepers? All wearing ochre robes for no clear reason!

OK, I'll quit now.

I used a volcano with gold coins over it and chain links beneath. I too thought the flaming eye was a bit cliched and a give-away since the players have seen the beholder a few times. In my campaign the beholder came to Cauldron more recently and aquired power so there was no reason the coat of arms would have any suggestion of a beholder.

For this campaign, I used a wheel which symbolized commerce, it had a great big red ring as its hub and had ten spokes.

Something with a volcano - maybe a flaming eyeball being shot out of an erupting volcano?

Of course, that volcano is supposed to be dormant...
