Disagreement between a friend and myself over the Monk's Belt magic item in the DMG. He thinks it only gives you a +1 to AC as a 5th lvl monks natural increase; I believe that if you were unencumbered with a light load and wearing no armor, you'ld get your wisdom modifier and the +1 to AC. Does anyone have a clue how it's really supposed to function? Please Help.
Thanks in advance.

I think the key statement to take from the DMG is the last sentence where it says "This bonus functions just like the monks' AC bonus." That to me means that the non-monk character gets the bonuses that a monk character of 5th lvl gets. That would include IMO the wisdom bonus for not wearing armor and having only a light load. The item is "magic", therefore it grants the wearer this extra bonus if the PC meets the right conditions.
At the same time you have to remember that although this sounds cool, it really doesn't do alot of good for many types of characters. Fighters and clerics, druids and rangers, paladins and barbarians, they all probably already have armor on that they most certainly will NOT be giving up(unless they are very low level and this belt should not be given out to PC's of that low a level anyway), and classes like the rouge and wizard/sorcerer have most likely not placed high stat numbers in the Wisdom slot. Anyway, thats my take on it, hope that helps! :-)

There is another disagreement about that same subject over on the Wizards boards right now. Did you get an official answer to your question?
