Races for starting characters?

Shackled City Adventure Path

This question goes out to the DM's who have started thier campaigns, or any who are planning on running it.

What type of Monstrous Races should and shouldn't be allowed?

What EL should be the cap?

Your suggestions and opinions are highly welcomed!

I told my players they could use anything that had a 3 HD or lower base, pending my final approval of their selection. It worked out well.

In addition to the standard, we wound up with a Quickling Brownie, Kobold, and Half-Dragon.

That doesn't sound too bad. That's 4HD to start, which'd probably help the PC's survive the death that is the first dungeon crawl!

I really don't know how they expect the PC's to survive it, I really don't.

It's tough--the party I'm running through the AP "barely" managed to defeat Kazmojen and they just took out Tongueeater, but only after 3 of them got dropped below 0 hp.

The party I'm running are all 3rd level now, consisting of:

Centaur wizard
Half-Dragon cleric
Drow Bard
Human Ranger
Human Rogue
Human Cleric
Halfling Barbarian

I'm running two gestalted characters through the AP. One is a Raptoran and the other Killorean.

I personally dislike characters with LAs, but that's just me, I guess.

Playing in the Forgotten Realms, I advised my players that they could only play a race that could peacefully buy tea in a Tea Shop in Escalant ... which given the culture of the region, would allow them to play some interesting choices (half-dragons, half-ogres, gnolls, tieflings, aasimar, etc).

From a mechanics standpoint, I advised them I was comfortable with LA +1 or +2, but would be willing to stretch to +3. We have a half dragon that I heavily encouraged to use the staggered progression on the WOTC boards written by SKR, so he could alternate between half-dragonish levels and class levels with Hit Dice and the like ...

I am letting my players start with an effective character level of 3 (so far only one with LA, a githzerai monk or druid, forget which).

The catch I'm using, is they start with 0 (yes zero) experience points.

My group and I feel that often times, keeping a character alive through the first 3-4 levels is more work than fun. So they get all the skills, feats, HD, and such for levels 1 -3. Only they are treated as 1HD for spell effects and such, until they reach the XP point for 2nd level. Then they get their 2HD rating and actions points for 2nd level. same for third.

This lets them have a decent chance to accomplish tasks first try, not have to stop to recover after every other encounter, and keeps them from being as likely to die in this very difficult first chapter.

ATM, I'm gearing up to start the Shackled City Adventure Path, and what I'm looking at is to allow upto a +2 LA race. The catch is that, all will be starting off at first level (LA modified races will have their xp totals figured to account for their effective level) and to keep every one on the same foot, all PC's will be starting with the starting money for 1st level (included the LA PC's). So, no bonus "cash/goodies" for the LA peeps.

I've allowed my players to pick +LA races, but made up quickie monstrous progressions for them. In particular, there's an Aasimar in the party; I made the aasimar get some bonuses (roughly similar to a +0 LA race) at the start, where the character is CL 1 with a class level. Then, when the character hits CL 2, they don't gain class bonuses (no hit die), but they do get the rest of the aasimar bonuses (more stats, energy resistance, etc). Quick-and-dirty, because I mainly didn't want the other players to get all jealous. But it works okay, I think.

What if someone wanted to play half-vampire, one quarter-vampire, or possibly even full-vampire as a PC full or part-time in your campaign? Where would you start with abilities and level equivalents for those types of characters? I'm interested in playing a half-elf/half-vampire character or two with the usuals, tiefling/aasimar, and drow in a dark campaign that takes part in the wars of rival undead possibly with some demonic creatures involved...it isn't anything I've started writing up yet but it is an idea. =) Any info or help would be more than welcome and appreciated. By the way, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if I'm asking something that is already answered. Later.

As for less than a full vampire, I'd use the Vampire Bloodline from Arcana Unearthed. I haven't ever really thought out statting up a half-vampire. I suppose something like that would have to be taken like the Half-Troll in Fiend Folio or some of the monster classes in Savage Species.

That's the way I've always run it! In fact, the rule of +2 LA maximum is a good one. Too many players want a higher level adjustment race, but it ends up building characters of glass -- without Hit Dice and saving throws, those 'powerful' characters end up falling down waaay too easily.
