Okay, it's assumed that the egg pops open and the worms crawl out. Well, the halfling in the group did balance checks, flanked with lizard men and pc's to kill the kobolds (they made a truce with Hiska)and didn't damage the egg at all. the adventure says the worms come out when the egg is broken. My pc's have stolen the egg.
So what do you all think?

That they will have a hard time coping with all those bad guys who are now after them!
Just pretend that one lizard has survived, has hidden itself and observed the party leaving his home with the egg.
That will surely bring the balck dragon (can't remember its name right now) after them.
Just think how it would be, if your players are threatned by this dragon on their way home. If they don't hand over the egg, which they should, because a black dragon will be too much for them, they will certainly perish.
Use the dragon aura of fear, and if you're lucky (chances ar good) the ps might drop the egg, and there we go...
On the other hand, I am sure the egg won't survive for long when it is out of its environment. There are ruls fo dragon eggs, being taken away from their nest in the Draconomicon, p.11).

Have the PC's stumble into the cockatrice lair on the way out of the swamp. (You hinted at their presence with random stone statues, right???) They're a mated pair. They have a pretty big clutch of eggs hidden in the muck.
Set up balance checks to fight in knee-deep water and mud. If the PC's make it through the fight without tripping and breaking the egg (get creative with kyuss-spawnling cockatrices...) then they've earned the right to keep the egg and discover the worms themselves without further harm.

In the Overload outline, in part 6, the dragon finally hunts them down. Taking the egg would just be another reason for this. One I am sure that the dragon will let them know about.
As far as repercussions of taking the egg out of the nest, thats probably up to you. Once its away from the nest it's probably not much of a threat anymore.

I don't know if my PCs will try to move the egg. Or even more unusual, move some of the lizard eggs away from the dragon egg to make a clear path to it; thereby making its removal all the easier. In fact, Hishka may even sanction this move, as she might be uneasy that the "wyrmling" may start feasting on the hatchery once it hatches from the egg.

So they go to all the trouble of raiding the lizardfolk, survive the cockatrices and then find that the egg is full of flesh eating, zombie-making monstrosities? Wow, that's a reward! :D

Yeah... :P
The PC's measurement of reward is XP.
The DM's measurement of reward is PC's covered in writhing doom and screaming in terror.
YMMV.

Unfortunetly thats what happened to the half orc fighter in the party(and everyone thought the wind tunnel in the whiseping cairn was a TPK). the good news(?) of this was that the "egg" hatched in front the lizardmen pursuing the group and the fighter turned into a spawn of Kyuss and had to be killed.this saved the lizardmen's eggs and then the lizardfolk praised the "noble sacrifice" of Tulmak.(needless to say,the player was not amused).
