Grallak's Funky Beholder Eyes

It's too creative for me to pass up. Any ideas why Grallak might graft beholder eyes? Do they grant him any new abilities? Are they significant in a spiritual sense? or do they just freak out the temple cronies like they do me?

As a new DM, it's too interesting a detail to gloss over. Has anyone done any backfill here in their campaigns?

Magic item that allows him to see for reading/writing. To work, they have to be sewn into an empty eyesocket.

In my Eberron campaign Grallak dies and instantly decays into a skeleton. Only his eyes remain, and they are now magically locked into his skull. They will later reappear as the head on the Ebon Triad. They will burn red, activating the aspects bloodlust.

Sovereign Court

I let him have a scorching ray attack out of one and it freaked out the pc's.
