Well Erik,
As someone who attended the preview, I have to say bravo!! It looks like it's going to be a great movie. As a girl gamer, I was particularly impressed with your choice to play a barbarian! I have one of that class myself! I hate to say it but I did get a laugh out of the ovation you folks received after it was revealed that none of the people who worked on the first movie were involved in the second. It was great to see the PHB's that were handed out to the actors so that they could get a real feeling for what everyone was trying to accomplish with this movie!

Yea, but isn't that sort of what was done with the first flick? I mean, Dave Arneson was on the set as a consultant (and as an actor in one cut crowd scene.) Just because the actors have copies of the d20 rules on-set doesn't mean they're PCs. But, since I haven't seen the preview, I'll reserve judgement for openning day.

To true that the first movie was kind of lame. Does anyone know who some of the actors are in this new one? Also, has there been any hint as to what kind of monsters they'll have? I'm hoping to see a mind flayer myself. Just as long as there are no drow.
I was trolling imdb.com to find something, anything on the sequel. I was able to find this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0406728/
...though there it's titled "The Elemental Might" which might give some clue to the plotline. Seems only Damodar (Bruce Payne) returns. Looks like the quest for Snails' soul didn't succeed.

Also during my imdb.com trolling I came across on the messageboard for the flick a post stating it's going straight to DVD, not the theaters. Is this true?

Chris,
Yes indeed this is going straight to DVD. Also, the special effects look pretty darn good. There are some wights/undead in this, a white dragon, complete with his cold based breath weapon and all. THere are a few simple explanations of things in the movie, like a spellcaster explains the difference between arcane and divine magic to the main fighter. And remember while yes Dave Arensan was a advisor on the first film, no other person from the first film has a hand in this we were told. I think it's going to be much better than the first one. We'll see won't we?| Llowellen |
I was at the Gen Con preview and the whole showing was one of the highlights of my Con - not because of the movie itself though (I'll come to that in a minute). I got there early and they were showing a D&D documentary that I can only assume was Dave Arneson's much talked about film. I watched probably more than 30 minutes of this and was enthralled. It was a great piece of work, the theatre was packed by this point with people showing up for the D&D preview but when it came time there were a great deal of groans from the audience who wanted to continue watching the documentary.
The valient Erik Mona and his crew were faced with a daunting task of a blockbusting line of people outside the theatre who thought they were at the front of the line, an already packed theatre of people weren't budging, and no equipment with which to show the preview.
The mood remained light, but as the writer, producer(?) and director (?) of the new movie took the stage BEFORE the screening to take Q&A while someone else scurried around looking for a DVD player there was a great deal of jeering, boo's and cheers and I absolutely applaud the sheer bravery of those guys for getting up in front of everyone.
Eventually the DVD player or whatever showed up and we were given a quick viewing of The Tick, before the correct disk was found.
A couple of more false starts - and much rucus from the crowd later - and the D&D was on the screen.
Does it look better than the previous? Much better.
Does it look outstanding? Hardly.
I think it will turn out to be pretty good, but the emphasis this time around seems to be so heavily in favour of putting the PH and the rules up on screen that it might come out looking clumsy. Time will tell, but I could care less about seeing the rules on screen, just like in a novel, what makes a good game doesn't necessarily translate.
Cheers

October 8th. I'm not 100% if it's the same movie, but if it's a scifi original, I have to lower my expectations. Sorry, I want it to be good, but I can't help it.
Based on the title I'd say it's one and the same...and on a bonus note looks like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is on SciFi tonight! Woo hoo!
Speaking of which, I was recently considering rolling up a ninja for a campaign (instead of a trapspringing rogue, which is what I ended up putting together since I didn't yet have Complete Adventurer.) I thought it'd be funny to try to design a TMNT-based character but didn't know what race to use since I couldn't find anything close to a turtle other than a Kappa from Oriental Adventures though they're only a couple of feet tall. Then, just yesterday, as I skimmed through my pile of 3.5-based Dragon magazines I came across issue #315, the Classic Campaigns issue, which featured (on pages 72-73) the Red Steel-based Tortle, a medium-sized humanoid turtle. Perfect! I think I'll roll up a tortle ninja on the down-low and should my rogue meet an untimely (and irreversible) demise I'll see if I can sneak him in.

All I can say is I really hope they don't put another pie in the face of gaming, and D&D in particular with this movie. Going straight to DVD already gives it the "Not good enough for theaters" taint to the man on the street. I've said it once and I'll say it again. Nothing hurts a hobby more than a crappy movie about it. Although if the movie really rocks, it could bolster D&D, except since it went straight to DVD, no one except gamers will really be looking for it. Kind of like when I saw Starship Troopers II at the video store. I thought, I don't remember this being in the theaters...Oooh it went straight to DVD...Skippable.
