One of the best gaming resources I've ever used that detailed real world locations was the Time Life TimeFrame series of books. Each book detailed a few centuries of real world history and discussed the cultures, building styles, pottery, weapons, armor, social life and military tactics of everything from the ancient Mesopotamian empires to the late Rennaissance period.
Those books are selling for $5 apiece right now on E-bay, but I bet you could find them at a public library. They contained 3-D full color maps of ancient cities, full color illustrations of period clothing, weapons and armor and lots of detail on the life and times of the various periods.
Tons and tons of inspiration for D&D.....

I guess I made a mistake by saying old issue of Dragon. This has been since third edition, though not sure if it was after 3.5. The one location that stuck out in my mind, was it mentioned a set of footprints in sandstone somewhere in the Middle East, that are said to be the first steps on Earth after being exiled from the Garden of Eden. Sorry for not clarifying.
