Betraying the gods?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Dark Archive

I just stumbled across a section of the adventure background for 'Three Faces Of Evil', that made me wonder...
It was already mentioned (in AoWO and 'The Whispering Cairn'), that the Ebon Triad is fooled into believing they'd pave the path for the coming of an overgod that is an adhesion of Vecna, Hextor and Erythnul, but are, in truth, preparing the return of Kyuss. The whole charade seems to have been planned over centuries or even millenias with the manipulations of mortals that, for example, scribed the 'Way Of The Ebon Triad'.
I believe even Vecna was fooled as he was still a mortal by the nearly god-like beeing that is Kyuss.
The passage that made me wonder was the section about the grimlocks that came out of the underdark after having received "lore of the Ebon Triad in a revelation from one of Erythnuls agents". This must've been an avatar or some other kind of divine beeing, that was send by the god itself, right?
If this would be the case, it would suggest that even the mentioned gods do believe in their "rebirth" as an overgod.
Is this right? Is Kyuss so powerful that he's capable of fooling even the gods themselves?

Perhaps it was an agent of Kyuss claiming to serve Erythnul. Although it does seem that Kyuss has a great deal of skill in the "fooling very powerful people" department. Otherwise there would be no Ebon Triad. Myabe this is something they will go into in more detail furhter into the AoW.

I hope so. This would be interesting. I have no doubt that he's able to fool any mortal, but gods that are far more powerful than himself?
At least Vecna could be amused at this charade, 'cause things like this lie in his nature. Otherwise he can't afford to lose followers to Kyuss. I guess all three of these gods are aware of Kyuss' claims towards becoming a god.
Well, i hope some of these questions will be explained here or in future installments of the awesome AP.

These three faiths reject the Ebon Triad as heretics. Perhaps the gods do as well.

Perhaps Kyuss is supplying them with spells and other divine energies, not the three gods. There have been those who worship archfiends and demons - a "sleeping" Kyuss granting a small number of followers (in the global sense) some divine energy doesn't seem too far fetched.

And lastly, remember it's Dragotha who has put a lot of this plot into motion.

I don't remember if it was in one of the messageboards, or the overload, or issue #126, but I believe one of the editors did state that Kyuss is the one granting spells to the Triad cultists. Also, Kyuss could have simply coerced or fooled a demon or other chaotic-evil being into appearing before Grallak. Kyuss could have even come to him in a dream as mearly a powerful force- the grimlocks were (I assume) Erythnul-worshipers before starting their pilgrimage, and might have just taking it for granted that the dream came from their god.

I would say that Vecna, being the god of secrets and such (and one of my personal favorites), would not be fooled by Kyuss. Even though he's only a lesser diety, I don't see Vecna getting fooled by just about anything. However, I COULD see Vecna coming up with a scheme and deciding that it would be a good thing to convince Hextor and Erythnul that the Ebon Triad was right, and thus making them more cooperative to all of Vecna's plots. If that were the case, however, they would probably be granting the spells, not Kyuss. So, ultimately, the other gods know that Kyuss is the sole power behind the Ebon Triad.
Why Hextor, Erythnul, and/or Vecna hasn't moved against Kyuss in some way, other than having their cults and churches attack the Triad on sight, may be a good question, although Kyuss' imprisonment in the monolith probably also protects him from the wrath of other gods. Or maybe the other gods merely wish to see Kyuss come to power- the Age of Worms never says what would happen once Kyuss succeeded. It would probably be a very opportune time for one of the evil dieties to conquer the Material Plane.
