So I've been working on an idea I have for a critical threat feature: a paladin possessed by a powerful fiend. As I read through the Book of Vile Darkness, however, I found that a possessed creature receives little-to-no "stat boost," so to speak, from being possessed.
While I understand that normally it wouldn't make sense for a possessed person to receieve benefits (possession is not, after all, a good thing) I figured that since the fiend and its fallen paladin host have been bound together for such an extended period of time (think centuries), they have, for all practical purposes, melded together.
So, to finally get to the question - does anyone know of any other rules of possession or prestige classes in other WotC products that I can possibly use?
Ha. Long prelude to a really short question. Sorry 'bout that.

The Permanency spell says you could research other spells to make permanent with DM permission. With centuries of time it would be reasonable for the fiend to have had the three physical stat buff spells researched. The book with the research and/or the spells that could be made permanent would be a nice treasure.

I like that idea. I never even considered using spells - I was too focused on monster templates or PrC's.

At any time, for any reason, a possessing fiend can bestow a +4 profane bonus to any single ability score of it's choice upon a willing possessed character. It can also bestow a -4 penalty to any ability score on a possessed character, willing or not (pages 24-25 of the BoVD, or page 101 of the ECS, or a slightly different description on page 204 of the Fiend Folio).
As a homebrew rule, you could have the fiend bestow the fiendish template on a creature instead (though I believe you have to stick to the core rules with the Critical Threat submissions).
I've had fun with possessions before; in one campaign I ran, I managed to convince everyone in the party to drink this "sacremental water," which was of course fiend-infested. They figured that their increased abilities were some sort of sacred bonus. Imagine their surprise later on when they were attacked by an only slightly misguided holy assassin (Slayer of Domiel if you have the BoED) who determined that the only way to rid them of their curse was death!

I don't have the BoVD, but I'm very interested in possession rules. Can someone copy them here? I know there is the Fiend of Possession PrC in the Fiend Folio, but that increases HD and all associated features of the fiend. If there are rules for possession without the PrC, I'd love to hear them!
Wouldn't that be a copyright violation?

I dont know. I hope not- I'd rather not go out and buy a book just for that.
In defense of the BoVD, it is a great product with a lot of other cool stuff besides rules for possession. It has the Arch Devils of the Nine Hells, and a good selection of Demon Princes, as well as prestige classes fro playing servants of some of those demons and devils. There's also so cool magic, rules on toture, and rules on sacrifice. Everything a Dm needs to make the PC's lives VERY...uncomfortable.

i would have to agree as a house rule to probably add the fiendish template to the paladin. but this could also be the basis to rid the fiend of the possesion and to bring the paladin back to holyness
