Shackled City HC price

Shackled City Adventure Path

Hey now.

I have placed a pre-order for Shackled City HC right here at Paizo for $59.95 + $6.77 shipping. A steep price, but one that I'm willing to pay for starting a new Greyhawk campaign series.

But FRP is pre-selling the same book for $47.96 + $4.95 shipping.

I love Paizo and what they've done to improve _Dragon_ and _Dungeon_, but that's quite a price difference!

Now, that being said, I understand that FRP would sell an item like this as a "lead-in item" at slightly over cost, just to get you ordering on their site, possibly buying other merchandise.

*However*, I think it would be nice if Paizo offered a discount to current subscribers to one or more of their magazines when said subscribers are pre-ordering other Paizo products. It creates goodwill and strengthens customer loyalty, IMO.

Happy 4th!

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the logic of having people buy 12 issues of the magazine to get the AP in the first place and then saying it will cost nearly $70 to buy it all over again. I'm aware the hardcover has new stuff and is a better product but it makes one wonder why we should invest in the Age of Worms issues if we can just spend money down the road and get it better.

I have placed my copy on preorder at my FLGS. Why would I buy it if I have all the mags? (and I do have them all) Ease of portability, errata, extra material, improvements in the storyline to help with foreshadowing, support of the notion that people will buy "Campaigns-in-one-book", and many other reasons.

Considering that my subscription to Dungeon ran out almost a year ago (financial reasons, not content) and I'm only half done with the Shackled City AP (using a friend's back issues), that's probably the route I'm going to be taking - buying the AoW hardcover next year and writing off the possibility of a subscription.

The AP modules have been the only adventures I've been using, anyways.

I can think of a few reasons

- the fixes, tweaks and changes make it worth it
- the extras make it worth it
- not having to lug many magazines about make it worth it

Not to pick on anyone in this thread, but we (as a collective group) clamored and begged for the HC, and now that it's on its way, we complain?! Doesn't seem right to me.

I've got the magazines (which I photocopied and put into a binder for ease of reference), and I have no problem shelling out the money for the Shackled City AP ver 1.2 (you get the idea). I'm going to get about a year's worth of enjoyment out of this, the enjoyment of which will be enhanced by receiving the HC, even though I'm running my players through it heavily modifying the setting and encounters. I simply can't find fault with the cost.

I don't think the manufacturer of an item is allowed to sell it at a discount so often you CAN get it a better price elsewhere. The reasoning being that the manufacturer could ALWAYS undersell the competition by simply selling it to you, the consumer, at the same price they had to buy it at. That is apparently consider an unfair practice and is not allowed.

I seem to recall this being one of the complaints that the WOTC stores made when they were operational and once they were owned by Hasbro most of their stock was from the company that owned them... it was likely one of the reasons that went into the decision to close them all down.

Anyway...

Hi, Ghul.

First off, we think it's great no matter where you buy the hardcover. Thanks! We think you're going to love it.

Now, there are two strong reasons we can't go too crazy with discounts for subscribers here on our site.

1) Some of our customers deliberately buy the magazine over the counter in order to support their favorite local game store. We think that's great. In the past, offering too many specials for subscribers would come back to bite us because it alienated these folks. This is not to say that we won't have promotions for subscribers only, just that we are cautious about it.

2) As a company just now getting into selling non-magazine products, we want the distribution channel to carry our stuff!

It's not that we are not *allowed*. It's that we want to support and encourage the network of game stores that keeps our industry going.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback and questions. Enjoy the book -- regardless of where you buy it!

Best regards,
- Rob

Robert -

I just want to say, I'm not sure that word is out there... my brother owns a gaming store and they were under the impression that the only way to get the book was to order it directly from Paizo. I have since thwapped him upside the head and gotten him to order the book (in fact, once they found out they could, his store manager immediately ordered a copy for himself as well), but I still have to wonder how many FLGS out there are not going to have this book.
