They gave a mummified goblin black glass spectacles but it seems Kullen might received more benefit than the inanimate corpse.
I mean no offense to any who suffer from albinism, but there are various sight related difficulties that arise from this genetic condition.
paraphrasing from a related site:
"Those with albinism, we'll include half-orcs here, generally suffer from varying degrees of partial-sightedness; either near-sighted or far-sighted and most suffer nystagmus (a rapid, involuntary "shaking" of the eyes) or stigmatism.
The lack of pigment in the eye generally leads to ocular photophobia or hyper-photo-sensitivity."
I wonder if giving Kullen the glasses one finds in the observatory might alleviate any ill will caused by failing to return with the gory tribute of filge's freshly plucked eyes. This provides good players with an option to retain their virtue without getting pile driven up the wazoo of the two- headed calf below the Emporium.
Either that or perhaps a light spell might weakin him during combat. Albinos are just fine and dandy outdoors but a searing light blasting at them? That might give the PCs a slight upper hand during a difficult melee.

Maybe they originally were Kullen's shades. I can certainly see Filge taking them from Kullen as a show of superiority over him. Kullen would certainly resent giving up his sunglasses to some scrawny freak, and this would explain why he wants Filge's eyes in retaliation.
Just a thought,
Busker
That ties it all altogether rather nicely.
Very well done.

Assuming Kullen spends the vast majority of the day toiling in Smenk's mines, why would he need shades?
Whilst subterranean, I'm sure Kullen would have little reason to ever wear sunglasses.
Then again, wherever you might find him, a sudden flash of light might bring him to his knees in battle.
Seems like something he'd have on his person just in case.
Light sensitivity can be quite debilitating.
Either that or maybe he just thinks he looks cooler in 'em. And there's the added plus that no one makes fun of his shaky eye, if he has one. ;)

Yup, albinism does affect vision to one degree or another in the real world.
In game terms, this condition could be simulated by giving Kullen the Light Sensitivity flaw on page 44 of Dragon 328 (Feb). Half-orcs with this flaw would suffer -1 on attack rolls, and -1 on search and spot checks while in bright light (which includes being in sunlight, or within the radius of a daylight spell).
Of course, to be fair, Kullen would then get an extra feat...since his rages are "legendary," Extend Rage (page 97 of the Complete Warrior) seems like a decent choice.

Well researched.
I was wondering which game mechanics might cover his light sensitivity. That flaw and extra feat you suggested work really well.
I think I should probably start an Age of Worms Word file and toss in some of the supplemental ideas being put forth from contributors to this forum. If I collect the gems, and the near gems, this adventure path might double in size and depth.
Yeah, that's what this Tolstoy novel of a adventure path is going to need... supersizing. I'm such a masochist.

Hmmm...a +4 circumstance bonus on saving throws against pain effects is nice, but...operating at minus 1d3x10% of total hit points due to self-inflicted wounds, grinning with sickening glee when stuck in combat, making noises of ecstasy when suffering terrible wounds...(pg. 10, BoVD)
Sounds like Filge. Are you sure you're a masochist?

I always assumed the Kullen and Co. encounter would occur at night. I mean, I like booze, too, but I'm not going to a dive bar at 9 a.m. to drink cheap swill and watch strays tear each other apart.
Unless I'm in Tijuana. :)
lol.
I figured he have a more nocturnal schedule as well, but I think a painfully bright light at night is the same as a painfully bright light during the day to an albino. I still believe he'd have good reason to have protection. Maybe he wants to wear his sunglasses at night.

Point well taken. :) I retract.

Brilliant idea. It works so perfectly they should use your idea when they bring out the hardcover. Of course, for those DMs who don't want to allow flaws in their game it becomes more problematic.

I don't believe he does work in the mines; he's the barman/bouncer at The Feral Dog, and when he's not doing that, he's menacing people or doing odd jobs for Smenk.
That's why he's so loyal; Smenk gives him much more fun jobs to do than his last owner.
As to the light sensitivity, why not give him the same trait his parent had?
Light Sensitivity (Ex)
Orcs are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.
Dazzled
The creature is unable to see well because of overstimulation of the eyes. A dazzled creature takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls, Search checks, and Spot checks.
I don't think this is a flaw quite worthy of a feat, but could justify a bonus trait.
