Balabar's Letter

Noted a slight inconsitency with backstory, similar to the one I noted in Life's Bazaar involving the skulk, Ghelve, and the language Common not being a common language for all protaganists.

Filge is summoned to Diamond Lake from the Free City by Balabar's letter. It says go to the Feral Dog and show this letter to the albino half-orc, he'll know what to do. The seething psychotic, violent, alblino, illiterate half orc barbarian. The one who cannot read.

It might just be me but someone of Kullen's less than sunny disposition would be less than pleased with his illeteracy being raised, and I doubt Filge would be happy with yet more people being exposed to his introduction letter given it's content.

Easily sorted by saying the other side of the letter includes an easily recognisable mark/sigil/symbol that Kullen uses to know when Balabar has sent people his way.

However, I find it somewhat ironic that the first adventures in both AP1 and AP2 have language/communication barriers between their NPCs within their back stories :)

PS I really like The Whispering Cairn, I just can't seem to help spotting things like this. Given that my party are in Flood Season at The Lucky Monkey at the moment, by the time I start running Age of Worms with a new party the hardback will be out and this "issue" will have been creatively edited out of existance :)

Having hime recognize Smenk's seal or personal sigil works; also, he could just hand it to one of his goons, who are probably always drinking with him at the Feral Dog. He may not necessarily be angry about being reminded of his illiteracy -- he just may not care about reading/writing at all.

Absolutely. And perhaps Kullen is simply expecting a person with a letter... no one else has a reason to approach him with a letter. Who else could it be but Filge when someone shows him a letter? Kullen certainly doesn't need to be able to read the letter to realize who the carrier of said letter is.

"Kullen, you miserable letch, listen to me and listen to me good. In a few days, a wiry fellow with sunken eyes will approach you with a letter he says comes from me. You will recognize the style and note that I have signed it with an 'S.' I assume you can remember which one is 'S,' but if not, get one of your goons to confirm it. Take this man to the old observatory and see to his every needs. Do not fail me in this task. Now be a good little servant and fetch me some sticky buns."

That work?

Yes, Erik's reply certainly covers what I had in mind, although I wasn't expecting a monologue of Balabar roasting Kullen over forgeting what his sigil, or more specifically the letter "S", looks like :) Filge is certainly distinct enough that he can be easily described, even to someone like Kullen.

It may be I have decided to play Kullen as a rage filled psychotic, you know the kind. You don't have to bump into him in a pub for him to say "You spilt my pint", more along the lines of "Ar' ya' looking at mah pint?", "Erm....no" "Why aren't you looking at my pint, what's wrong with it?" "Er, nothing", "Ar' ya calling mah pint a slag?", etc until he starts a fight. Oddly enough I have actually met real people like this, although they aren't usually albino half-orc barbarians (although they probably where in a previous life).

As for letting Balabar suggest that one of Kullen's goons read the actual content of the letter (as opposed to just the sigil), I just don't buy it. The content is sensitive to say the least and not the sort of thing that Balabar would want any of Kullen's highly unreliable (and greedy) NE thugs knowing about.

Balabar specifically brings in his old friend from the Free City because he can probably count on him not being involved, and as he is a necromancer he has the suitable skills to investigate what Balabar saw and stole. Balabar actually fully trusting Filge would probably be pushing it too far.

Anyone else in Diamond Lake (with certain exceptions) could possibly be involved and would most likely sell Balabar out, it's certainly something Balabar would do to others.

Anyway, a sigil shaped like an "S" on the outside of the letter works for me.

"Ah've told ya before ya stupid git, an "S" looks like ah' slitherin' snake, ah'n not tha' one yah pisses with. Nah' get outta my sight afore ah' 'ave yah' sliced up an' then chucked in the Lake fer a swim wiv ah' rubble filled pack, you muppet".
"Sorry Balabar"
"That's Mr Smenk to you, you slag, now get out" etc.

Hmmm, must watch more Lockstock and Snatch and have Balabar like Hatchet Harry or Bricktop. Lot's of cockney ryhming slang would certainly be a memorable character trait (must watch The Limey for that). Pity Kullen is really thick, could have been a bit like Vinny Jones.
