'Trophy Hunting' in Dragon #332

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Dark Archive

I'm playing a LE orc ranger in one of my campaigns and i plan on taking the 'Trophy Hunting'-feat described in the class act-section of Dragon #332.
While reading the article a few questions came to my mind and i'd like to ask if anyone can help me out.
The DC for gaining the benefits of eating a heart is described as 10 + 1/2 HD + Con-modifier.
Is it 1/2 the HD of the slain favorite enemy?
And whose con-mod. is added? The one from the enemy or the mod. of the PC?
I'd guess in both cases it means the favorite enemy, but it's not clearly described.

The benefits from eating the heart and from wearing pelt are quite similar to each other.
But i think that the benefit from the pelt is more powerful than the heart-benefit but doesn't require a save or involves any other kind of risk.
Is it meant to be like that or did i get something wrong?

As in almost every case like this, the HD and Con modifier is that of the PC, not of the creature slain.

Unless one of the gnomes on my staff chimes in and says otherwise, that is.

Thank you, Erik, for the quick respond.

It seems that the risk of suffering one of the descriped side effects rises while the PC advances in levels.
Sure, his fortitude save mod. raises too and i can understand that this seems necessary regarding game balance, but how should this be explained in-game?
If it would depend on HD and Con.-mod. of the slain creature, the risk would rise according to the general toughness of the slain specimen.

note: I haven't read the article yet - so I'm pulling things out of... midair. ;)

It doesn't sound like it would make much sense to base the DC on the character. It sounds like it would be the same as basing the save against poison from a snake or scorpion on the character's HD and con mod.

The "1/2 HD+Con" refers to the creature slain. This means that it is more difficult to gain the bonus from the hearts of more powerful foes, but these bonuses last longer.

Hope that helps

Thanks to the "gnomes"...:)

Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to me.
No i've got to convince my DM to accept this feat for his campaign.
Puny humans, you just wait...
