DM versus Player Mindset in a given Campaign Setting

3.5/d20/OGL

I was just wondering if anyone else has this mental mindset. I can get in the mindset of running the Forgotten Realms and DragonLance. I can see from the point of view of the power groups and movers and shakes, and I feel like I have a handle on how the common folk in a lot of places react and act.

I love Greyhawk as a player. I would much rather play as a player in Greyhawk. It works differently than my mind works, so it tends to "surprise" me more, and since I can't get in the mindset to run it, I absolutely love playing in it.

Does anyone else have these kinds of mindset issues with different settings?

I agree. I am a DM, but in my opinion Greyhawk is the way it was ment to be. It was the origional. Plus it doesn't have all of the crazy media hype like Dragon Lance and Forgotten Realms do.

Its just become so ingraned in me to think in terms of "Zhentarim, what would they be plotting . . . how many resources would they have dedicated to this . . . "

But when it comes to running into a member of the Scarlet Brotherhood or a cultist of Tharizdun, I have no idea what they might be up too, but I'm up for a good butt kicking . . . (inflicting one, that is)

Mabey you should ask your DM to run an Oriental campaign, just to make it even more challenging. Or maybe he should create his own campaign world.
