DUNGEON on CD-ROM

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

Hi there Dungeon-Staff

A couple of years ago there was a collection of 5 CD-Roms with the first 250 issues of the Dragon-Magazine in pdf on them.
Do you plan something like this for Dungeon?
Why I ask? Today I received my copy of #116 (germany is always a little later with the issues...) and there was a small list of the best 10 adventures found in the Dungeon issues. Some of them I know, but the most are from older issues and I thought it would be great to browse all the old issues. Even if they cover the older editions of the game, they're never to bad to get some ideas out of them!

Dryder,

I think this would be a great idea as well, but it is unlikely to happen. The Dragon CD collection ended up in legal trouble after it was released due to author's rights not being covered appropriately.

All new contracts for author's work now include an electronic distribution clause, but the original contracts for both Dragon and Dungeon did not. As I understand it, if Paizo wanted to release a CD collection now, they would have to get the permission of every author published in the magazine prior to when the revised contracts were first used. As I am sure you can imagine, this would take a great deal of time and money to track people down and negotiate rights with them.

I would love to get such a collection, but I won;t be holding my breath.

Cheers :-)

Hi Omand!

As far as I know a subscriber does confer all rights of his/her adventure to paizo. But maybe I am wrong on this and maybe this is only true for a couple of years now.

However, maybe its easier to track those people down here on this board. Maybe they read this thread and write to paizo that they find it as well a great idea - and give their OK...

But as you said... I won't be holding my breath ;)

I seem to recall that the problem wasn't the rights to the articles but the rights to the comics.

Kenzer & Co had not granted Dragon the rights to republish the Knights of the Dinner Table comics in electronic form. Kenzer came to an interesting settlement with WotC: Kenzer got the broadest possible licence for their Kalamar world PLUS the rights to a lot of 1E and 2E material which became the core of their Hackmaster RPG.

Anyway, I'm another who would love to see the old issues of Dungeon appear as PDFs through RPGNow or this website... anything but DrivethruRPG unless the DRM is removed.

I was just tooling around looking for the Dragon CD-ROM myself, actually. Does that mean my only hope is E-Bay?

Hi!

Just for your Info. In germany these 5 CD-Roms came out in one package and that was in the mid-90ies. I am pretty sure you will not get them in the stores today. So eBay sounds great!

If not on CD would it be possible to get back issues in a downloadable format? (ala eBooks)

Take away the comics if necessary, I only read those once anyway, its the adventures I crave :)

Yep, that's a cool idea! Sounds like a big trade! Put away the comix and the advertisements (if neccessary) and just give us the adventures! Man, that would be great!!!

Any comments from the dungeon-staff here...PLEEEAASSE ;)

Hi there,

following the thread...
I agree with Dryder: if the *only* problem is copy rights to the comics: you can many old threads concerning the same topic (including my own about a month ago) - you will always read the same: people would love to get access to old out of print issues of Dungeon BECAUSE OF ITS ADVENTURE contents, not because of its comics (the latter just would be a nice bonus, it is not essential to most readers, I guess, though).

Just remove the comic content, keep the rest, put it on cd-rom, and many happy long time Dungeon readers will buy it! :-)

Greetings from Germany,
Guenther
