Challenge of champions

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

Hello everyone!

Since reading and participating in my first contest of champions, I found the series awesome. But i have a lot of difficulties tracking them down.

Could anyone send me all the # of the dungeon magazine where i could find them plz?

Thx a lot

edit: typos

re-edit: I found out about the ones in #91 contest 4 and 108 contest 5.

Sorry Kallikos,
Same thing here, i keep the search though

Vookar!!!!!!!

Here you go:

Dungeon #58: Challenge of Champions
Dungeon #69: Challenge of Champions II
Dungeon #80: Challenge of Champions III
Dungeon #91: Challenge of Champions IV
Dungeon #108: Challenge of Champions V

As for Challenge of Champions VI...I'm working on some ideas, but I probably won't have anything ready to submit to Dungeon until early next year at the earliest.

Glad you enjoyed them!

Those Contests are great stuff. I played through one as part of a combined tournament. One part dungeon bash, one part duelling and one part a contest of champions. We had lots of fun.

I am using the first one as a starter for my Forgotten Realms campaign, where capable people are sought to find good officers to enlarge a new standing army. This is concealed as a tournament to find a group of adventurers to go to Phlan. So lots of adventure groups will be there, but also a singles admission is available, where teams are formed based on the different profession of the applicants... a good way to bring the characters together.

(btw I am translating all the read aloud text of Contest Of Champions I to German, if anyone is interested)

Thx a lot Richard,

Now i only need to find those dungeon magazines...

Anyone could send me only the contest part of the magazine?

For those of us who have no idea what these are, could somebody give a little synopsis?

It is a tournament that is open to adventurers and parties of all levels. It is a series of riddles and challenges that can all be solved by a quick mind, because spellcasting and the use of equipment other than the items given to you at the begin of the challenge are a cause of disqualification. Each task is shown to the characters and then they have 15 minutes (real time) to solve it. Every character getting out or reaching the destination gets 10 points. Fairly simple and just brilliant.

I did play Challenge of Champions IV when only three of my players cuold attend and it was great.
The only problem is, that both CoC IV and V (don't have older issues) is quite language dependent (especially the last scenario). So I need to translate and customize the text. Plus I have to redraw all the pictures, because a "custom" picture means that I changed something and what do I need to change? Language elements of course.
But it was fun to watch the players, smoke ascending from their heads as they where looking for solution. I especially liked the Totem scenario (don't remember exact name right now), while "Elf Hive" was simple matter of time (my wife used to hold record in Mines game).
But it was really cool.

We also played CoC IV, but we played it with the language scenarios in English (living in Germany), it's like having a group of Elves trying to start in a Common spelling bee, but it was fun.

I am preparing CoC I right now for play this evening, and there are only two language based szenarios out of ten...

Well, for the last scenario I had to use the english version, but I did give the players some clues.
But the "language barrier" was really shown in the sick sailors scenario (don't know the exact name) which I ran in english too. One of players started to speak aloud letters of the sentence that where / where not (don't remember the correct solution right now) on the letter ring, and in the final try, she simply spelled out the "Command word ..." text out of it. But even she new it was english and she knows english quite good, she simply didn't realise that she spelled it out. At that point I simply handed her the text, because I think that native english speaking person would solve the problem at that time.
But it was fun and all three players talked about the session for another two or three weeks.

Well, I ran Challenge of Champions I yesterday, and we had a blast. Since the party took a long time to assemble we went into the tournament at 10:30. It took us 2 and a half hours to complete, and they had a blast. My comments about CoC1: it has only 1,5 language based scenarios from 10. The tasks are fairly easy compared to CoC4. But nonetheless the tournament itself was cool. They were so good, that I had to include the sabotage plot at the end, and they still made it through.

Challenge of Champions is a good series. Even if you don't like the adventure format, you can pick it apart and use the various parts of it as traps for your own games.

Since I have translated all the boxed texts into German, I wanted to ask, if there is interest in a German language version and how to go forward with it. I don't know if someone at Paizo wants to have alook at it, or if it will be made avaiable by them, because I think it would violate the product identity to have such a document floating around.
