Hey! Great topic!
Legends of Anglerre - I prefer it to Pathfinder when it comes to people that want to really create a character & go in many directions that isn't so limited to hard rules. (no offense Paizo, you're still one of my favorites!) The learning curve is a little steeper, but for me it was about even to learn due to there being a little less math involved. With a few homebrewed tweaks to the skill pyramids, etc. it is my favorite system. Your stats ARE your character's personalities & talents. (FUDGE/FATE system, I'm not really sure of the difference).
Marvel Heroes - Though I have only read the book a couple times, it looks a lot more simple to set up - & I'm all about systems that free the characters from doing too much math & letting them focus on playing the character, telling the story, etc. (I am about to post a topic about this actually.).
Mystic Empyrean - Fun, odd, high-powered. You are basically demi-gods rebuilding planets, on quests to find stones that can aid you in the mission. Where that takes you on the way, can be quite fantastic. Emotions, & actions even!, are each assigned an element (the element wheel is lightning, fire, stone, etc. very unique!!), so who you are really defines your power/powers. Very easy to run too strong, but I had a very very fun loose game with my brother & his wife.
Those are the systems I've used & loved.
Mystic is easy to learn, a little harder to implement (so you're attacking? FIRE. A high combat campaign would be full of FIRE based characters.. depends on your playstyle & homebrews).
Marvel Heroes looked more simple & freeing up, but really made for Xmen/people with mega powers (we've done a medieval mutants sort of game with this system, but can't seem to find a similar SIMPLE system that is specifically for medieval fantasy)
Legends of Anglerre is a bit different to learn. I had to step out of my D&D 3.5 & Pathfinder (3.75 in my book! I'm not a fan of D&D 4, etc.) mindset & look less at math & more at qualities, words, definitions. It's a really fun system with the right intelligent group, but for those that want a more board game feel, it might not be the best. (Not a board game person myself, though I'm down with the battlemat when it's time!)
Oh wow! Thank you Liz Courts. Sorry I missed it. All my best.
Oh wow! Thank you so much everyone. This is a trove of information.
Lots of publishers mentioned here & glad to hear about Aguelarre! I'd only heard about it before & now I simply must look it up.
Here's hoping for an established publisher to approach Paizo!
The MMO must be the first issue at the moment, so I understand that.
Hey everyone.
I'm curious if any of you have purchased those glass gems/half marbles for gaming, & if you know of a site where you can get a great variety of colors without having to buy 20 of each color.
If you're not sure what these are, here is an image:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/StarryNightStudios99?section_id=12081041&ref= shopsection_leftnav_7&order=price_asc&page=1
The bottom is flat & the top is rounded. In a few of my games, we used them instead of mini's, with each of us picking a color, & then NPCs fitting into the other shades. In another game, the PCs had mini's but most NPCs were half marbles.
Thanks so much, if you know! Let me know.
All my best
She's my favorite iconic. & I just laughed so hard reading the discussion. I never knew her story until now.
Oh cool. Thanks Baron.
I'll get in touch

What about the Spirit Shaman? (Complete Divine)
update:
Discovered Brooklyn Strategist. Looks awesome. Meeting more people that want to try games.
Busy with writing & music but Mystic Empyrean should be here in a week or so. Living to give it a try with people!
Very cool, Ringtail!! I cross my fingers for this! Maybe one day.
Hey I checked out those.
I did order Mystic Empyrean & will be getting Legends of Anglerre soonish. So many good things out there haha. I'm trying to see how different it is to straight up Strands of Fate (& I have heard it does fantasy better than the generic SoF system, regarding powers, defining magic, etc.)
Mystic Empyrean seems really designed for its own setting &/aka the settings the group creates. But could be used in a number of ways as well. Really cool concepts.
Also getting Eoris in August. I'll post a review when I have it - seems not many reviews are up.
I looked at a lot of links on the Swashbuckler system you mentioned. I'm not big on swashbuckling, but that's cool to know. Looking more into PDQ. The list grows of things to look at!
Thanks CourtFool. I just checked those out. Jaws of the Six Serpents & Z of Z look amazing. Looking at the basic PDQ system pdf before I buy. Thanks!! Have you played either of these systems?
Any updates on Spanish Pathfinder? I know the MMO will take alot of time but just curious if anyone has an update or if anyone's taken this project on themselves?
I know it's been a while but so glad to read all this feedback I've missed. I'm favoriting this thread.
Updates:
I found Mystic Empyrean. It looks really interesting. 60$ though, (plus 10 more on top of that if you're going to buy the essential balance cards that decide everything about the game) so pricey, but I might be getting it.
Legends of Anglerre looks fantastic. I don't mind the stats of SoF but could do without them.
Looking through this again got me going on looking them all up again because it's really hard to decide but a lot of this insight from you all has helped so greatly! Thank you tons
All my best

Hey, I moved to NYC in Nov '11 & looking for a GM/Storyteller/gaming group that has room or wants another for an in person game, not play by post.
I've usually played mystics, druids, witches, & sorcerers in 3.5 & PF, but have been known to play other things. I also have experience with nWoD & Werewolf.
I'm up for any system really - but no Pathfinder Society stuff. I do want to try some new systems outside of the d20 bubble, but it's all good.
Also open to any theme & setting - transhuman tragedy, epic fantasy, superheroes, horror, real life drama, supernatural, dark age magic, etc. Just getting a good bunch of people together & roleplaying a great story & developing characters.
World of Darkness (Werewolf would be awesome), Cerulean Seas, Eoris, Noble Wild, Ars Magica, Minimus, Legends of Anglerre, Polaris, Barbarians of Lemuria, Strands of Fate, Eclipse Phase, diaspora, Mystic Empyrean, Into Dreams, etc etc,
I really want to try something non-d20. (I have Strands of Fate but have yet to play it)
I'm 25, laidback & easy going, mellow & sane guy. I've GMed before too, & might have to again, but want to be a player for a while. Something like Ars Magica or Mystic Empyrean would be cool because of the noGM-ability.
I'm in it for the character & the roleplay, the fun & the story. Not min/maxxing, boardgaming, numbercrunchery. Let me know!
Availability-wise, I work fulltime with two days off a week. I live in Red Hook in Brooklyn. Up to travelling anywhere in Manhattan, & part of BK. Might be able to host a small group here after I've met some people

More very cool info!! I can't want to hear all about it from the Gazetteer (& anyone know when the Tian Xia guide is out??)
Thank you both. That helps alot!
Hello. I'm making a character for a new PFS game & was told to look into Tian Xia as I had questions about character background. I want to play an elf, but curious if elves - having seemingly spread everywhere - are in Tian Xia.
I know there are so far at least mentioned in Paizo's products:
Aquatic Elves
Desert Elves
Dark elves
Gray elves (Mordant Spire)
Snowcaster elves
Wild elves
Now I know a few people who dislike the "every kind of elf" question, so please if that's you, I don't want arguments or anything like that. I'm just curious.
Thanks so much!
Ooh & as I hit submit post, I thought of what blackbloodtroll just posted. There you have it! haha
"It also says that an Oracle's (and a cleric with the Animal Domain) bonded mount behaves like a druid's animal companion, only it has a minimum intelligence of 6."
The oracle (or cleric with Animal Domain) is treated as a druid in all respects. The only difference is that the Oracle's companion has a starting intelligence of 6.
This is sort of like a few other class features that are described as similar to a separate class's. For example, the druid who takes a domain as their Nature Bond rather than an animal companion is treated as a cleric in all regards to that domain.
Hey, thanks for responding with all this awesome info, people. I'd be game to try many different systems too.
I JUST got hired so here I am posting. I work at Organic Avenue in Midtown & love it! Still busy today but get I'll get in touch with people tomorrow. What kinds of games are you all playing? Theme-wise? Are you all doing the Pathfinder Society pre-written play? or freeform?
Pirates? Gothic? Ancient Aztec? Fantasy Africa? etc - themed
Hey, I will write you. Sorry it's taken so long to get back. I've been going crazy jobhunting.
Post holiday weekend at the latest, I'll get in touch with you. Today I played a gig so it wouldn't have worked anyway.
I'm glad you play Pathfinder! I don't know much about society - always been open world, but I'll give it a try.
I used to have Ultimate Magic, PHB, APG, but gave them to a friend when I moved. Thank goodness for the d20pfsrd!
THanks so much & talk to you soonish!

I am so excited to see the Witch & the Druid. I hope the wizard & witch are differentiated a bit more. Perhaps wizards don't have familiars - they have the bonded object. Or the witch's is tougher, or something?
That said, making a world where you can do SO much is great & a huge pull. I do hope for the focus on character customization over a mega constantly-changing world. But both options are great.
I'm hoping for a variety of options for every class - not the standard 3 builds that WoW & every other mmo is known for. It would be AMAZING. You'll want to read the "What classes will I be able to play?" section of the FAQ. Thank you for directing me there. I like what I see very much. I still don't understand, but it is based on professions rather than classes. That's great, more customization, but then how does someone become able to cast certain spells, or have an animal companion, etc? I like it & I know it's still new news but waiting to see more description of that. Unless no one can cast spells - in that case I get it.

The blog says wrote: A lot of big picture work has already been done on Pathfinder Online, and it's going to be a bit different from your traditional fantasy MMO. It's going to focus around the characters you create, in a world that will grow out of your interactions, developing the way you choose to develop it. It takes place in the River Kingdoms of Golarion, with our own Kingmaker Adventure Path providing some of the inspiration. There will be an overarching storyline, and dungeons aplenty to explore, but where Pathfinder Online is going to thrive is in the ability of each of you to leave your mark on the world. Do you want to build a castle that you own and control? Go for it. Want to start a town and rally folks to your banner? Do that. Do you want to ally with the neighboring villages to form a new nation—or perhaps wage war on them instead? The choice is yours. Want to become the most feared bandit in the River Kingdoms? The path is available. Want to become the greatest armorer that Golarion has ever seen? All it takes is hard work. If you can imagine doing something in the world of Golarion, we want you to be able to do that in Pathfinder Online. I'm particularly excited about all that this carries with it. Will every single "spec" be available to characters, creating a TRULY unique world? (different builds of classes from the APG, ultimate magic, combat, etc)

^^ I'd like to know too. For anyone that has this book, how has it lasted a few years? Is everything still good? How does it work with the new classes from APG?
& another further question I'll ask in the forums..
Wow!!!
I'm sorry to post back on this so late. I got so busy & then moved to NYC & now just found myself on Paizo forums again.
You guys have contributed so many amazing options. It's difficult & overwhelming to consider all of them, but dammit I'm going to try! mwa haha.
Much gratitude! (& If you're in NYC looking for another player whose very open to system & pro-roleplaying over boardgaming, hit me up!!)
Thank you very much.
I thought I'd made it clear, but perhaps not clear enough.
I made a very ornate backstory for Meninx, & the tribes all had different bits of info about her. The people of the two cities on either side of the jungle expanse as well.
Touching base with them; I just thought I'd check for any other advice here first. Merci for wonderful responses

Hello. I'm curious about something.
I'm using Heroes of Horror's suggestion:
I have a campaign where monsters are "rare, & each is likely unique. However they each came to be in their different ways, each one is practically impossible to kill. Only those with the skills & fortitude to investigate each monster & determine what methods can be used to permanently eliminate it can hope to rid the region of the beasts that terrorize it." (The Medusa is a good example of this. Killed by her reflection. In my world there would be only one, not a whole race of Medusas walking around). Compare this with Greek myths, where not many have ever seen monsters but there are tales about them & anyone that can kill them are heroes of the ages.
Has anyone tried this & made it work? My players seem to keep thinking do enough damage & it dies. Very board game in that respect, after a while. The fight with Meninx (essentially my version of Medusa) taught them to look for weaknesses or find some other strength in order to defeat her.
I'm not sure how to go on with the others though. I have an idea for a Minotaur & other things (yes, taking from the old, but spinning with my own ideas), but how do I balance these two things?:
-Making the players realize they can't just rush in & start hacking at the monster/humanoid monster thinking of the hit points only in their heads..showing them they need to know its weakness or be armed against it with a special weapon, etc etc
-Still have them feel like heros. (is this essential though haha) It's all in the storytelling & the roleplay, how the surrounding peoples of the jungles look at them as heros & saviors of the forest for defeating the vile Meninx & her obsidian tendrils.. but is there more than this? Should all creatures have some weakness as they do in the greek myths?
Thanks! If anyone's tried this "variant" of sorts, do let me know how it went, or if you parted ways with the idea a few monsters in.
New age how? I checked it out but it seems pretty standard, almost Avatar-like even. Not having the books in front of me, it sounds pretty much like a more open system too, as it gives you a "race creator" (honestly, something that isn't hard to do if you know any system) & I can gather from various forums that there isn't much depth to the backstory, but a TON of history so depending on when you set it (apparently setting it in the present - besides the random God killing herself thing - would prove less adventurous & exciting than setting it in the past).
Anyway, just my thoughts summed up. But to me its like any fantasy setting, with races that can really be anything the storyteller decides.
462 pages.. wow I realize how it could be so expensive now. (60 bucks on amazon).

I'm a fan of books, but that affordable PDF of Strands of Fate sounds awesome!! SO I'll buy that for sure. I have heard the lula or lulu whatever printing company's binding for the hardcover (or is it softcover) is not durable.
What i would end up doing with a pdf anyway would be to bring it to a printer & have them make me a book of it. Customized cover & everything, win win win!
DO you think Dresden Files *has* to be played in an urban modern day setting? (I ask as an aside, even though I'm already getting Strands)
I love the others that I've been looking at on here but Strands seems like somethign I really have to check out. I've never played anything FATE related.
I do like what Blue Rose did with hit points & a couple other things. The magic system is apparently amazing but I still haven't checked it out. True20 was released later & has updates but I have a few gripes with the return of skill points, whereas in Blue Rose there are none. I of course would do a few things differently though.. but it gives ideas.
I looked at Earthdawn & liked their character sheets - it seemed much more inventive characters could be made than in Pathfinder (not to say that it is limited at ALL in pathfinder, but if you know what I mean, then great.. haha. Archetypes are the best thing to happen to standard d20 I think.. without going on & on on that..). BUT I have heard that Earthdawn is very Exalted in style. I was not a fan of Exalted. I enjoy WOrld of Darkness, but something about Exalted was just not my taste at all.
I'm going to wait on Eclipse Phase until I can find out any information dealing with the third printing (that includes the revisions). It's unclear if its out yet.. The site has an update in April that said it was, but I can't seem to find info on amazon or other sites. It does sound cool, & not SUPER niche (though a little). The Gatecrashers book looks awesome.
The others mentioned - I will be looking at them eventually. Thanks a ton!
Thank you so much for the information & advice!! This helps me so much.
I'm looking at ordering Blue Rose, Eoris, Earthdawn (I haven't heard anything else about it besides the magic system is fantastic) & reading, returning whatever is not my thing.
Strands of Fate as well. I hear beaming things about it (though over 50 bucks on Amazon.. yikes!! No go on that for now.. I may just get Dresden cos its cheaper.. though Strands sounds like THE one to get for what I'm looking for)
I can return what I don't like.
I'll make more of a response after I've gone through & looked at these suggestions more. But I'm totally grateful
Eclipse Phase sounds interesting. It has won some Ennies & is very not fantasy, as are the aforementioned.
I don't have the money to buy all of these & check them all out at once haha
A couple others I've looked at but still know nothing about:
Eoris Essence. This. looks. beautiful. Very pricey though.. But gorgeous. I downloaded some character sheets to look at & am blown away by the detail.
Earthdawn - Sounds very cool. One of the only books I've come across to NOT be cheaper on AMazon, but that's alright. I love the cover (it is in its third edition) & have read what I can of the rules.
True 20 (I mentioned Blue Rose earlier, but was looking more into True 20)
I have never played either of these. Anyone who has?
Does anyone have more information about this game? I'm looking at buying it.

Hey everyone. I've been paging through this forum looking at people's posts about other games out there. I must have 30 tabs open at the moment of things to check out.. haha. I thought I would make a thread seeking advice on something I've been trying to find for a long time.
A roleplaying game with rules that make the focus on the roleplay, the characters, the development, the stories.
I know that it can be done with Pathfinder (though I homebrew it dramatically into a FASCRIP style amalgam you can see here), & I've also done it with World of Darkness.
Both were tons of fun.
I am merely trying to find something different. It isn't completely that I'm bored with the rules of these two systems, but I feel like maybe there is something else out there I would totally love, but have no idea where to start!
Here are some things I have looked into more in depth:
Ars Magica - It sounds fun, but after reading pages & pages of forums, it seems common opinion is that with each edition the Magic system & rules get more complicated. The troupe style could be interesting, but when I GM/ST, I know that not all my friends who are playing will want to play mages. As much as I would want to try it myself, I can't seeing it work with the people who game when I GM.
Blue Rose - it sounds beautiful but just starting to look into it. A lot of the reason I try to look for something outside of Pathfinder & d20 is the odd ability scores of Dexterity & Charisma. (In my own system I split Dexterity into Finesse, which handles nimble handedness, & Agility, which is more akin to bodily dexterity. I've also never liked how the book tries to make Charisma into two things at once: force of will & how much people like you. While I realize they'd be related, to have them as one stat never worked for me). Currently trying to find out if Blue Rose has the same d20 stats, or does things differently, as the setting sounds beautiful. I also just found out is a setting for True20.
Dresden Files - I know nothing about the TV show, & have only looked at a character sheet. I liked how different it was, though I know nothing about the FATE system either. I have heard it is more about roleplay, so I'm looking into this one too. Is everyone meant to be a magician in this system, though?
Angel/Buffy (dramatic Unisystem) - I had these books a long time ago & lost them in a move. I remember liking them but at the time I had just been new to d20 & didn't really understand much of it.
I've also looked at the iCAR system (though for me to sit & read all the pages of it.. would take a LONG time.. one day haha), as well as the beautiful Into Dreams. (I'll post links to these shortly). Into Dreams seems like it could be made into something completely different, or used as a sort of different system when characters in another one "go into dreams".
I like in depth creation & stories, where the players have more control over their character's story. I am not a fan of class systems but have compromised in the FASCRIP homebrew mashup I made.. I'm just trying to find something I can play out of a book as is. Or mostly as is.
I also have never been great with high level d20 play. I'm not saying I need my fantasy to be as realistic as a modern game, but I tend to play E8. (This is another reason I like World of Darkness.. but still looking!)
Thanks in advance. If you can offer advice on lines to look at, with a little info about each one, & your experience with it, what you think of it, how it relates to previous editions if any, etc etc, it would be so appreciated!
Quandary wrote: Does anybody know what Spanish language publishers are already doing related material?.... Quandary, you have a lot of good points to say on this. I'll look & see what I can find. I realize it could be an investment on Paizo's part but could be a great move in a new direction. Embracing the bilingual could lead to so much.
I still hope for the Spanish language - going to see what I can find on your ideas.
Thank you for responses, & yay a review!
SO. MUCH. ERRATA in this book.
I love it to death; don't get me wrong.
With the amount of missing spells that got me so excited.. are we who bought the product being offered anything for free? A pdf of all the missing spells even?
I understand when things go missing. There is always errata, & I would expect it. To a certain amount. But when this much content is missing.. & it is so confusing trying to actually USE the book (Spells that say Oracle & no other class aren't listed in the Oracle spell list, etc etc)... I feel I spent way too much money for this.
I really like the term "Mythic" for it, as an earlier poster stated, because it gives that vibe of demigods duking it out, Hercules, etc.
I do feel like everything should have its cap though. 3.5's epic levels were hilariously all over the place. Skills & BAB most obviously. You can only get so good at tieing your shoes, or cutting with a knife, or dancing. In epic play there was no limit to anything. (Not necessarily bad when stood next to the fact that people are summoning meteor storms, but still!)
If it was done a bit differently, rather than just "your character keeps getting the same increase to attack every level & if a caster, a few spells here & there, etc etc" then I would absolutely be pulled in to play that higher level style.
In short, I'll never play "epic", but would enjoy playing "MYTHIC".
This has oracle revelations as well? I could buy this & use it strictly for an oracle? Or they separate from this class's abilities or the same?
Thank you, I'm just curious before I buy, & without any reviews I don't know yet
I'm going to combine Caineach's & Robert's suggestions, & your point on peacock feathers is solid too. I did paint her outfit a forest green.
I'm waiting on it for things I ordered to get here. Thanks again to all of you
Oh my gosh, thank you so much.
I still haven't painted her - game was today & thought I'd fudge her & ruin the whole paint job if I tried. I'm loving those feathers!! Thanks!!
Thank you, I'll try the latter.
Green putty is something I've never been good with. I try! But I always fudge it so it ends up looking like a mass nothing. Like.. black pudding haha.
I may upload a picture of how she looks now that I've finished her pre-feathers. I'm proud of the job but must try your suggestion
Hello all.
I recently purchased the very detailed Dark Elf Sorceress miniature:
Dark Elf Sorceress with staff & dagger
I'm curious if anyone has any advice for painting feathers? Her hair is a bit anime for my tastes, & I want to try & paint the front strands as light feathers, like a feather head dress.
If anyone knows a good place to buy tiny half inch feathers, let me know. I can't find any anywhere haha.
My original idea is to paint them white or bonewhite, then etch the strands with brown.
Or do you think it is just not doable, as the mold is not very feather friendly? In which case I'll just have to accept the anime hair & call them elf dreds.. haha
Any tips on doing this - especially tough since they aren't molded as feathers in the first place - would be highly appreciated! Thank you tons. Share your ideas/opinions
I'm excited for any Mermaid related info, as well as more Elf stuff.
There are many good points made in this thread.
I would vote for 0 or 1. I honestly love everything about Pathfinder, & tend to stay in the E8 version of the game. But the thing is that doing this does not require a special book or anything. It makes sense for people who enjoy high level play to have their high level stuff in the book, & I can just play to a certain point. It's already here.
Although, I did vote for 1, because it would be nice if it was at least addressed.
I would never go back to 4e. I don't understand how anyone would merge the two in the first place. D&D 4e is a board game, PF can be just as munchkin, or roleplayed, etc. Such variety.
I'm glad to see the first response say "No", as Pathfinder is its own thing now. It's not a "setting or stylebook" of D&D. It is so much beyond that. Cheers to Paizo's future!!
