Jes' call him a dead one...that's all 'e is now. Fool tried the rock, and got me friends all done in the process. Now, let me start from the beginning. See, over two hunnerd years ago, a Free Captain named Magna Stormeyes found this natural harbor on the Windward Isle, and figured, rightly so, that it'd be the perfect haven from which to launch a pirate fleet. She built the keep there as she set about her trade, piratin' the waters around the area. The keep was perfect as she could pick out ripe targets from on high, and see enemies comin' from afar....least, that's what they say.
Stormeyes was so successful that she built a fleet and other strongholds, and soon claimed the Hurricane Crown as her own. Course, as these things go, she was assassinated by rival Free Cap'ns, and the rock fell to one of her cap'ns, Greta Frome. She run it for a while, and become a strong Free Captain in her own right, till it changed hands again. An' that's the way of it - good fortune waits for one who can crack the Rock, but the problem is that it puts a target on ya', right quick.
Most recent lord of the Rock was Bertram Smythee, captain of a few brigs. Over a decade ago, Iron Bert went to sea with a small fleet in a feud with Free Captain Carola Antiochus an' was never seen again. Word came back that Antiochus had lured Iron Bert into the edges of the Eye and ambushed him with the help of some other cap'n - Harrigan, if memory serves. 'Ol Iron Bert managed to sink Antiochus afore the Hurricane stole 'im away, and then this Harrigan takes over his fleet. He tried the Rock, they say, but Iron Bert's widow, Agasta Smythee, took over the defenses, and turned 'im back.
She rules there still with her troops...an' I know...felt one of those spears meself. He pulls up the cloak to show a wicked scar that runs up his side. A bit to the left, and I'd have been holdin' in me guts.

I need to look up what we learned about this situation. Its been too long.

Jack looks at the doorstep, and shrugs. He grabs a bottle of rum, and swims over to the front doorstep. Upon which he sits, and opens his bottle of rum, and toasts the lady of the tower. He then sits, drinking his rum, loudly singing bowdy songs from the northern coasts.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Tap's, no Jack's. Tap's hand. I seemed to recall that the widow is a halfling herself. But if not, Landless Jack wouldn't mind it if he did have a piece of rock to call his own (and her's too of course).
I'm taking it the rescued slaves are out of the picture more or less as far as potential crew goes?
meta-gaming here, but I'm guessing the Rock is destined to become our base of operations one way or the other.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
ok, TODOs
1. Is the ram fitted on our new ship? (what did we name it again?)
2. We want the catapult off of the old ship and put onto one of our others. In particular, I thinking a catapult might be more useful for launching fireballs over walls.
3. What does our balance sheet look like with Ricketty?
4. What next? Do we have enough crew for the second ship?
5. What to do with the former slaves (Ricketty seemed to have doubts about their welcome).
6. We should look for a base of operations. Set up a camp/small town in some nice place. The former slaves may be interested, or not. I'm not exactly sure how far we want to take this. Can we have some kind of idea of what sort of people they might be, and skills? Because if we start up a base of operations, we'd probably want people around that can do things there (for pay, of course).
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Ricketty, what would you give us for the ship, against what we owe you?
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Well, perhaps we can fit that catapult on the ship we're getting retrofitted now. As for the boat, perhaps we just go back and see if we can trade it in Rickety to pay off some of our debt.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Well, this lot may want to join as freeman crew; otherwise, we drop them off ... where? You are not thinking of giving up this new ship, are you Captain?
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
btw, Tap, why is wer're taking orders from you here, and in our other campaign too, huh?

Its getting awfully crowded here. And I think their captain is up to something
acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23 to move through threatened squares[/dice]
derring-do: 1d6 ⇒ 2 [ooc]1pt panache, add this to my acrobatics roll
Jack leaps out and over the gap between the ships, pulls Tap's beard, and then leaps back over to the other ship to attack the captain, but the captain he sees now is too far out of reach. So instead, he thrusts his sword at the pirate between him and Sunyata.
sunyata we have no time to dance with these pirates. Its the captain we want!
attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 + 2 = 26 adding a flanking +2 to this attack
damage: 1d6 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 2 = 16
shock-damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Jack prepares to spend a point of panache to parry and riposte
Let me know and I'll post the rolls

are we within hitting range yet??

There is a futility to the life of a pirate. In another life, a person might be able to plan out his day from the sunrise to sunset, or from the beginning of a season to ends, or even from a harvest to the next, or longer even. But for a pirate, what is the use? Just today, Jack had planned to go down to the kitchen and make a sweet apple pie, just like his mama used to make. He'd seen that the cook had stowed a sack of them away before they left harbor. But now? Even if Jack survived this fight, he doubted he'd be eating apple pie at the end of this day. Sigh
Well, Captain, our plans didn't exactly turn out, did they. But if we kill their captain, maybe we can end it soonest. Send some of his guards to a nice nap, if you can, Captain.
With that Jack leapt over the plank, and dived into to meet his doom. At least a pirate's life is interesting. No chewing on a blade of grass for him.
Jack attacks the first pirate he sees, a skinny red-skinned fellow, who, lets be honest, didn't look to enthusiastic to meet him. Letting out a ferocious growl, Jack greeted him with a lunge of his blade.

How many crew can we muster to shoot bows/crossbows? I think our strategy here is Tap's spell incapacitates, while we shoot at them with arrows. If we enter the area of the spell, wed be grappled too

Seems like if someone could cast sleep on the rowers on one side of their boat, they'd swerve off in one direction...
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
150 increments. the usual.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Ramming is designed to damage the ship and sink it. I'd rather take the ship without damaging it, being as we're pirates. I suppose that
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
We are 300 feet away. We move 100' a turn. Our ballista and their catapult have range 150ft. But the catapult has a minimum range of 50ft. So it can't do anything if we are right beside the ship.
Maybe we can outrun them. And now is the time to try.
But otherwise, we should get as close as possible (e.g. ram it).
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Rush steps it up.
Since I had initiative, I want to fire our ballista first. Its on the back of the ship, so I think we can. DM can we get a shot in?
Also, I think that it really makes sense if everyone has their crossbows ready, and gets off a shot before ram impacts. Seems like it should be possible to shoot, and then after impact, cross over.

Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Do we look so weak that they'd turn about? Or do they wish to parlay?
There may be more to gain by trade than by a fight. On the other hand, I'm not gonna give up our hard fought gold without one.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Well, like the old pirate RumBuzz used to say, "Running makes ya look like prey. Only run if ya can get away."
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
I did level up to 5, forgot to update char page on pathfinder.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
our ram will probably crack on our first ship, and then we'll just get the one with all the articulation of a giant's fist.
anyway, if we're all done with that, I say, we should go ahead with trying to wed tap to the lady of that tower

I'll be headed out Friday and won't be back until after Tuesday. Cabin in the woods; very limited internet, if any at all.
Let's just take this as an opportunity to update our loot and character sheets.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack laughs and gives Tap a big wet hug.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
we should keep most of those potions and wands. mage armor is very useful, for example.
Jack will take the bow and the MW warhammer, and forgo his share of the treasure if y'all feel that would be most fair.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
anyway to upgrade the wand?
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
thing is cash trade-in is really poor. I *will* take that bow if nobody else wants it or can use it better. i've had more than one occasion where I've used one
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
I'd like to claim the masterwork war hammer. I'd like a bludgeoning weapon to complement my blade
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
I think Tap has the most skill with the bow
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
(MW composite longbow +4 str bonus) dang!
MW is masterwork, yeah?
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
(MW composite longbow +4 str bonus) dang!

Jack looks up and sees Tap swimming down.
Don't worry Captain, its already taken care of.
He stands aside to let Tap be the first to enter the wrecked ship.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack watches the undead monster as it swims toward him, and then expertly thrusts his blade through the the monster's chest, and then ripped his blade out, tearing out large chunks of undead flesh.
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
damage + d6 shock damage: 1d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 10 + (2) = 14
crit-confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
crit-damage: 1d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 10 + (3) = 18
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
swim: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Well, with the +6, you get two attacks with damage potential of: 1d8+6, and use your monk level as BAB, plus your strength modifier for your attack roll: 1d20+6+4 or something like that. lot depends on yrou feats etc.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Sunyata, can you bludgeon it?
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack sees the undead monster try to grapple Sunyata. Jack shudders, but tries not to waste the opportunity.
aoo: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
damage+shockdamage: 1d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 10 + (6) = 21
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack curses.
Pirates? any day.
Snakes? fine.
Orcs? bring 'em.
But undead? Jack shivered, remembering how, once when he was a boy, they had buried his father on the corner of their little farm. His father had gone on a bender, ended up in a brawl, and then had visited a s+$~ty whore house situated outside town in an overgrown wood, and then, never came home. No love lost, the burial was quiet and unceremonious; his mother poured out all the liquor over his grave, and they all went to bed easier than they had for any night they'd remembered. Unfortunately, his father's corpse hadn't been content to lay in his grave, and came a lookin for his liquor late that night, and not finding it, started in him and his mom...
ugh.
What is the captain doing up there?
Jack swipes, aiming to take off the things head.
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
damage + d6 shock damage: 1d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 10 + (2) = 14 assuming shock won't shock sunyata
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack's head clears, and he manages to swim down to Sunyata. He points to the door, though clearly Sunyata is already pulling out a pry bar. He pushes her out of the way, grabs it and starts prying open the barred door. After a few moments of grunting and straining in his air bubble, he sheepishly moves over for Sunyata.
strength: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
swim: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Jack shrugs, and then dives into the water, and his shoulder slams into something hard. The waves toss him around, and he swallows water.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Jack shrugs and says, I'll go down too.
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Yeah, my aunt had it. Was on oxygen, but pulled through. She already survived Polio, so she's tough!
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
Hey hey Sunyata. Welcome back. Sorry that its been rough.
We're about to dive for treasure. Let's do it!
Male Human Swashbuckler Lvl 5
ok crew, what are our options here? spells, techs, potions
